Spring Playlist + Aesthetic {2020}

Hello, dears!

Let’s talk about music! I’ve had a lot of fun putting together another playlist post for you guys today since my, it’s been a while. Spring always seems like a season of hope to me, despite whatever the news is saying right now. It’s hard to be too sad when I go outside and see new green life spreading over the old brown world as it always does, year after year…

So here are a few of my recent favorites and hopeful songs to brighten you day. I hope you enjoy! Grab your earbuds or speaker and let’s get listening. 🙂

Note: I’ll link to a YouTube video where available, but you can also pull up all of these on Spotify. *nods*

polaroid 1

Breathe deep the air to fill my lungs
And beauty sings her songs to me, every note I follow
To find out where the voice is coming from

this beautiful life – COLONY HOUSE // Such a lovely song about the longing for something beyond the ordinary. Most of Colony House’s songs seem summery to me rather than springy since they’re generally quite upbeat. A good artist to check out if you haven’t yet. 🙂

polaroid 11

Its grace went through me like a sword
And came out like a song
Now I’m just waiting for the day
In the shadows of the dawn

shadows of the dawn – THE GRAY HAVENS // The Gray Havens is one of my favorite bands because their lyrics are extremely creative and poem-like. This song is perfect for spring, which seems like the dawn of the year in many ways – the sun is just rising and everything’s about to burst into bloom.

polaroid 10

If I wished myself a superpower
I would make this moment last for hours
If I had my way
Time would just stand still
Wait for me until
I find some magic film
To take a photograph and live inside

photograph – CODY FRY // The first time I heard this I wanted to listen to it on repeat because oh my word, this song paints such a soft, rich, beautiful picture in your head. And a relatable one as a photographer. Help.

polaroid 3

We’re coming back to life
Reaching toward the light
Your love is like springtime

springtime – CHRIS RENZEMA // I’ve recently been enjoying Chris Renzema’s songs which have kind of a folk or acoustic feel to them, but with a twist. This one seems a bit more CCM, but the lyrics are lovely!

polaroid 5

You won’t be the only one
I am unfinished, I’ve got so much left to learn
I don’t know how this river runs
But I’d like the company through every twist and turn

grow as we go – BEN PLATT // I love the general aesthetic and feel of this song. Tender, hopeful, not to mention pretty. 🙂

polaroid 14

I’m just a man and I can’t understand
but I’m trying
This plan that’s divine
is so different than mine
I can’t find it

promised land – STEPHEN DAY // This one’s a little different but I really like it. The lyrics are so real and relatable – I think all Christians feel this way sometimes. I love the balance of sadness over a dream not coming true and yet trust in a plan that’s better than ours, even if we can’t see the end of the road yet.

polaroid 4

A decade goes by without a warning
And there’s still a kindness in your eyes
Amidst the questions and the worry
A peace of mind always takes me by surprise

what would i do without you – DREW HOLCOMB & THE NEIGHBORS // This is such a sweet song. I’m not a big fan of generalized love songs because they tend to be kind of flat and cliche, in my opinion, but I do like love songs that have a story to them, especially a true one.

polaroid 12

My children, don’t worry take my hand
I’m taking you down this road you don’t understand… yet.
There may be tears while you’re waiting for these answers
You can see the picture I can see your future

there may be tears – SCOTT CUNNINGHAM BAND // This one has a theme similar to the “promised land” song earlier, but with a more upbeat melody. Full of good reminders and just fun to listen to. 🙂

polaroid 9

Take me to the garden
Bury me inside my skin
Lord, make me whole again
Wake me up in Spring
Leave behind worthless things
I’m rising with new wings

butterfly – JOSH GARRELS // Watch out – this one gets stuck in your head. XD I’m not exactly sure what style it is, but it’s catchy! The lyrics are so creative and beautiful, as usual with this artist. He somehow manages to use the analogy of a butterfly in a fresh way, which is no mean feat.

polaroid 6

Often love ends in sadness
It burns and bleeds and breaks before it bends
Look at what we’ve built from all the madness

amanda – JOHNNYSWIM // Another specific/story love song. 😉 I could listen to this one over and over. There’s something beautiful and haunting about this melody that ahh, I just love. Plus the husband and wife in this band both have amazing voices!

polaroid 7

Something is familiar
Like a dream I can reach but not quite hold
I can sense you there
Like a friend I’ve always known

show yourself – RISE UP CHILDREN’S CHOIR // Okay, so this song probably makes you think ice and winter instead of spring, heh, but I absolutely LOVE this version. It sounds so clear and fresh because it’s sung by children (children with incredible voices, I may add). Watch the music video I linked if you can – it’s beautifully done.

polaroid 8

Are you weak? Are you poor?
Are you wanting for more
In the quiet of your heart?
To yourself you say,
“I wish someone would pass my way
And give me a new start.”

too good – JESS RAY // I like the “aesthetic” of this artist as well. It’s very soft and acoustic, although her melodies are slightly monotonous at times. This song manages to be both tender and real at the same time.

polaroid 2

No more night. No more pain
No more tears. Never crying again
And praises to the great “I AM.”
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb

no more night – DAVID PHELPS // I don’t listen to much of the gospel music genre, but I love the songs of David Phelps that don’t have that flavor because his voice is unbelievable! (Also if you want to hear a guy sing really high, look up “Virtuoso” by David Phelps. O.o) The chorus of this song is… hope. ❤

polaroid 13

but remember every now and then to look down son
a whole lot of beauty is happening around us
that will dissolve to sunlight one fine day

jacob’s ladder – GWENIVERE // Gwenivere’s songs have such amazing lyrics that I like them despite the music not being as much my style. (“Mask” is another great one for creative lyrics!) I can relate to this one so much. Somehow I am both cynical and a dreamer.

polaroid 15

Let it go
Daisy, let it go
Open up your fists
This fallen world
Doesn’t hold your interest
It doesn’t hold your soul

daisy – SWITCHFOOT // Let’s end with a bang! This one starts soft but gets pretty rock-y at the end, so be prepared. 😉 I especially like the soft part and the wistful melody, though. And the words that I pasted up there. ^^

__________

There we go! That’s all for today, my friends. I hope you enjoyed those songs and maybe found some more music for your own playlist. 🙂 Before you go, I’d love to hear…

What songs have you been loving right now? Which of these songs or “polaroids” did you like best?

Thanks so much for reading, dears, and have a lovely day!

  1. I love this playlist! Jess Ray and The Gray Havens are two of my favorite artists. I must also recommend Andrew Peterson’s Resurrection Letters Volumes I & II (Easter albums, and some of the songs — Remember Me, Risen Indeed, and All Things New — are very spring-y) and Skye Peterson’s new album Searching for Us (which, although not themed around/about spring, was released in the spring and is by a teen artist who’s doing amazing work! so go check her out!).

    1. I’m so glad you like it! YES, I love both of them! Ooh yes, and I love Andrew Peterson and his Easter songs. “The Ninth Hour” is one of the prettiest instrumental songs ever. Ooh, I will definitely check out Skye Peterson!

  2. EEPERS HOW LOVELY. I think you know I love most of these songs, and some of them are actually new to me! YAY! Also I have Photograph currently stuck in my head. I love that song. ❤

  4. It’s from a totally different genre, but I’ve always thought “Morning Mood” by Grieg was very springish. It sounds so much like the sun is popping up over the foggy hills on a crisp spring morning. Definitely one of my favorite classical pieces.

And I’ve got to love Nellie’s crown of violets. So adorable! 💕

    1. Ooh, I shall put that on right now. I like more classical/instrumental pieces to listen to when I’m doing something that takes more concentration.
Hee hee, YES. She’s so cute.

  5. What a unique & beautiful idea! I did lots of photography in March but things cooled off for April, and I’m finally getting back outside again. I adore this playlist (especially Ben Platt!! I love him from Dear Evan Hansen). I hope you’re having a wonderful spring, my dear! I honestly can’t believe it’s here, and I want to make the most of it however I can. 🤍🤍

    1. Well thanks, dear! Ahh yes, I love going outside and taking pictures and just… yeah. 🙂 I AM having a good spring, even though some parts are definitely hard because of the coronavirus and I miss my friends. But yesss, I feel the same way! ❤

  6. I love these posts, because of the beautiful polaroid-style pictures, and because most of the songs on your lists are ones I haven’t heard before. (And I also can find seasonal playlists I know I can listen to the songs on without worrying about what might be in them.🙃)
The only songs I had heard Ben Platt sing were from Dear Evan Hansen, but I really like the way his voice sounds, so it’s nice to find another song by him.
There May Be Tears was so comforting, especially with all the disappointments I’ve been struggling with over the last few weeks.
I’ve been listening to Rend Collective’s and Skye Peterson’s new albums, as well as a song called “Grace” by Drew Miller. I hope you and your family are doing ok in this craziness!

  7. Thanks for all these recommendations Allison! I love listening through your song posts because we seem to have a similar taste in music and I’m always looking for fresh, wholesome songs 🙂
One song I’ve been really, really enjoying is called What You Could Do With Me by Josh Wright. It is such a soft, gentle reminder that I can rest in Christ to be my strength. Here is the link to it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18yPXnLgNec . Thanks again!

  10. This is such a great playlist! I love so many of these artists. 🙂 Ben Platt is so great. I just LOVE his voice. Colony House is a fun band. They have really upbeat songs. And I love the lyrics of Josh Garrels’s songs. The song “Closer Than A Brother” by him is really good.
    Great post! ❤

  11. Heeeey…I told you about Rise Up Choir! XD Every time I see something I recognize from telling you about show up in one of your posts I feel so accomplished for some reason. XD XD
Okay I’ve added Promised Land, Too Good, No More Night, and There May Be Tears to my playlist! And I listened to only part of There May Be Tears and even though it has a peppy tune the lyrics made me cry. XD
One song I like a lot right now is Ashes by Celine Dion. It’s from the Deadpool 2 soundtrack apparently, which I don’t even watch. XD But I found it randomly on Spotify somehow and added it to a playlist for a book I’m writing cuz it seems to fit it and stuff going on right now. It’s really pretty and catchy and emotional. I really like it. 🙂
And OH MY GOODNESS NELLIE LOOKS SO CUTE WITH A FLOWER CROWN!!!!!! ❤ ❤ ❤ XD I thought the flowers were just part of the branch around your featured image's title font, but no she's actually wearing it! XD It's so adorable!
