Experiments with Self Portrait Photography

Hello, dears!

Since I’m the only subject that’s always available for photographs, I’ve gotten a lot of practice in taking camera selfies in the past several months. πŸ˜‰ Since you guys and I both liked the last self-portrait experiment post (see it here!), I decided to go ahead and edit these in some fun ways, including dramatic B&W, muted/understated filters, and more double exposure photos since I loved how they turned out last time!

It feels a little odd to just post a bunch of pictures of my face, but… I hope you enjoy? XD And maybe you can find some inspiration for your own photography/editing. πŸ™‚ Have fun scrolling!

I like to start these posts off with a normal picture of me so you know what I actually look like before I get too deep into editing. XD So here’s an unedited selfie from back in coat and sweater weather.

Okay, I think we’ll start with some not-so-edited ones from when I took a walk and felt like making a daisy crown. πŸ™‚

Also it was SUPER hot and sunny that day, so my freckles briefly appeared. Sadly you can’t really see them normally, but in the summer when I’m outside in the sun a lot, they’re more visible (especially after editing πŸ˜‰ ).

portraits (21)

I don’t want to get repetitive but I had to put this one in here because it’s, like, one of two where I’m smiling?? I smile a lot when I’m around people, but I guess it feels more natural not to when I’m just staring at a camera and not at a lovely human.

portraits (22)

This last one from the daisy-crown photoshoot reminds me of one waaaay back in the archives, in this post, back when I had much longer hair. I’m trying to grow it out again but my hair grows awfully slowly.

portraits (20)

One Sunday I took a walk in my skirt because I didn’t feel like changing into jeans… But hey, I didn’t get any rips in it! Just poison ivy. -_- You can actually see the leaves in this picture if you look closely. XD So I thought I should put at least one of these photos in so I had something to show for it. *nods*

Also, several of you guys have commented on the skirt… I actually got it from Amazon! Find it here.

portraits (9)

I was going for an old-fashioned look in this one, maybe just slightly foreboding since I was standing beside the graveyard. :p

portraits (10)

It’s kind of hard to get a clear twirling picture with self-timer. But with much perseverance, it’s possible!

portraits (11)

Okay, a few close-up eye pictures coming up – just a warning for those of you who find it disturbing. XD Personally, I love eye photography and all the fascinating colors and patterns in one that tiny circle.

portraits (4)

What color do you think my eyes are? They normally look brown, but here I think they look more green. It depends on the lighting, I guess.

portraits (5)

See, technically my eyes aren’t brown because they only have a small ring of brown in the center. But they’re not really green and not really gold ( that would be weird O.o) either, so… yeah, I can never tell. Oh well. There are worse problems in life. Just a few. πŸ˜‰

portraits (1)

Ooh, this was fun to edit! I hardly ever wear makeup because 1) I’m not that good at it, 2) I have very little makeup/supplies, and 3) IT TAKES TOO MUCH TIME. But I practiced hair and makeup a bunch before Aria’s wedding to see what kind of style I wanted (see the result here!), and got some interesting pictures out of it. I really like this one.

portraits (3)

Super dramatic. :O I love dramatic black and white. I went for kind of a chiaroscuro/old painting style here, which was a lot of fun. And my, I look rather different in this one than in the first picture! O.o

portraits (2)

Now for the double exposure pictures! Hee hee, this one was so fun.

portraits (17)

This one turned out to be like some weird collage or something. O.o But I love the colors and aesthetic of it – also how the flowers in the sky look like fireworks!

portraits (8)

Now HERE’S a fun one for you: mermaid hair! I used handpainted watercolor texture for this one and I’m actually quite pleased with the result! It’s fun for different. I would never dye my hair this color in real life, though. XD What about you?

portraits (19)

Last but not least, we’ll end with one of my favorites, which is actually a phone photo. I love the simplicity and purpleness of this, hee hee. It would make an interesting profile picture if I didn’t want people to see what my face looked like or something.

portraits (15)

So, yeah! That’s it for today, my friends! I hope you enjoyed this fun little collection. πŸ™‚ If you’re bored, taking and editing self-portraits is a great, creative way to pass the time and practice your photography skills.

Which photo was your favorite? Would you dye your hair a crazy color? Do you have any self-portrait ideas or tips for us??

Thanks so much for reading, dears, and have a lovely day!

  2. This was fun and very interesting, Allison! Haha I totally get the eye color problem! My eyes are more brown than green, but have seemed to become more green as time goes on! Lol

  3. What a neat post! Going through these photos makes me kind of want to experiment with self portrait photography (I say kind of because I don’t really like photos being taken of me). XD I really like the last photo and the B&W ones. Very dramatic! I also like the eye ones. I just started doing a few eye photos with my sister, and I like how they’ve come out! I’ll definitely be taking more like that. πŸ˜€

    1. Why thank you, dear! Hee hee, well the nice thing about taking pictures of yourself is you can easily delete them if they don’t turn out. πŸ˜‰ I do too! Ooh, that’s super neat. How fun!

  4. Heh, I don’t wear makeup either (mostly because I’m horrible at it, and also I prefer looking more natural, I suppose) and no, I am definitely never going to dye my hair!!!! *shudders* Lovely pictures. Eyes are fun :). And dramatic photos. And graveyards (in a morbid kind of way). πŸ˜€

  5. Ooh, those are all so good Allison! What program do you use for editing your photos? I love playing around with dramatic & fun editing features, so I’m always curious to know what programs people use! πŸ˜‰ I think my favorite was the first of the double-exposed, it’s so unique! 😁 I wouldn’t dye my hair an unnatural color either. πŸ˜‰

  6. You want me to pick just one favorite??? Oh, this is amazing. I loved the dramatic black and white ones best, I think. I’ll have to start some experimentation with self-portraits… πŸ™‚

  7. These pics are so beautiful and unique even though they are all your pictures. Your outfits and poses are stunning and elegant. These post just made me realise how alike we are! My hair was very long, but since I cut it, it grows very slowly. I also agree with all your reasons of makeup. And yes, I would Never dye my hair too. I liked ALL of your pics. Dont put me in a fix trying to decide just one!

    1. Thank you SO much! I’m really glad the photos were all interesting despite being of the same subject. πŸ™‚ Really?? We do sound similar! YES, same. Ha ha, well no worries, I will let you pass this time. XD XD Thanks for the lovely comment!

  8. Fun photos! It’s always good to experiment with different things. I want to try more self portraits, but my camera remote battery is dead…
Anyway, my favorites are the ones of you wearing the yellow skirt, especially the second yellow skirt photo. I like the vintage matte editing style.
To answer your question, I would never dye my hair a crazy color (at this point I don’t want to ever dye my hair any color). I prefer the natural look and my hair is fragile, so I wouldn’t want to subject it to harsh hair dye. πŸ™‚

    1. Oh bummer. *shakes head* We lost our charger and had to wait, like, two weeks till a new one came so I know how that is. XD
Well thank you! Those were fun to play around with.
HAHA YES. Yeah, I get that and I never would either. The most I would do is highlights, but… I probably will always just let it be natural. πŸ˜‰

  9. Ohhh!! These are all so cool! I’ve actually never tried to take any self portraits, but it looks super fun! I think my favorite is this one! https://farmgirlslifebackup.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/portraits-20.jpg?w=1100

Also, that yellow skirt is amazing! And to answer your question, I think that if I had light blond or white-ish hair, it would be really tempting to color it, just because it would be so easy! But since I have really dark hair, It’d probably be to much work the color it any crazy color. XD Lovely pictures, and lovely post! πŸ™‚

  10. Oh the double exposure ones are always so cool!
No I don’t think I’d ever actually die my hair either. At least not permanently. XD
