Hello friends!
I wanted to continue my (almost) tradition of sharing a nativity-themed piece of writing in preparation for Christmas. As usual, I’ve interspersed the piece with pretty Christmas photos, this time of my family’s beautifully decorated house. But this is a poem rather than a short story, so I’ll also share it as an unbroken whole at the end of the post.
I hope you enjoy reading this as you prepare to celebrate our Savior’s birth. ❤

Low under the glitter-dark night,
my body flames with a curse and a promise.

In my bones the breath of God—
blow through these thin walls
and shiver my skin,
rattle deep in my soul and
shake out my deliverance.

Pain in rivers,
blood slick on the ground.
There a dark rose blooms:
the promised seed to crush the cursed head.

I drown in an overflowing cup
foamed with agony, and—ecstasy!
The Savior is born.
Light, all is light—
I am light and new and joy again.

The fresh babe’s slim cry
builds a pillar of cloud:
breath of God rising
in the frosty night.

Sweat-damp callous of my husband’s hand
gently roughs my salt drip tears.
We all fall,
folded together,
weeping in three voices.

We all breathe
jagged, leaning
on the sharp-cornered manger
laid with the soft
breath of God,
born new and endless,
helpless and omnipotent.

Fringe-winged lashes and
tiny star fingers—
heaven-sent.
God-breathed,
rag-wrapped,
golden-haloed by the yellow straw.

He gives me wings,
sweet child.
Sweet boy,
the world is lighter now.
My heart—my heart!—is flying.

I hope you enjoyed reading that little poem as much as I enjoyed writing it. ❤ You can find my Christmas stories of past years with the links below.
Thanks so much for reading, my friends, and have a lovely day!

Allison, what a beautiful poem! It really helped me see the pain and joy Mary must have experienced. Such a miraculous birth!!!
I love how you emphasized the breath of God. It’s so amazing, isn’t it? Thank you for sharing it as well as the lovely photos.
My family and I have a YouTube channel and have been singing and posting Christmas songs lately. I have enjoyed dwelling on the birth of Christ through them. 🙂
Merry Christmas, friend!

Your poem was definitely a gift as it’s easy to lose that wonder of Christ’s birth!
Our channel is For His Name’s Sake. We sing hymns and other Christian songs, including German Christmas carols. We just posted our last Christmas song for this year.

P.S. not sure if you’ll receive the reply I sent several minutes ago. I was using my phone instead of computer and accidentally clicked a button before I was ready, ha! But if it did work, sorry that now you’ll get two replies!
