Of Birthdays, Cake, and Lots of Yellow

Hello, dears!

My sister Megan recently had a birthday which involved cake, friends, a scavenger hunt, and TONS of yellow. It also involved me, the sister who took probably hundreds of pictures because it was so much fun to capture the joy and laughter, plus the pretty party decorations. 😛

If you like cake, yellow, or being happy, you will probably enjoy this post.

Hopefully everyone’s still here – otherwise WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM? :’D Ahem. Now for all the sensible people, let’s get on to the pictures!

We shall start with the scavenger hunt and end with the party. Two of our blogger friends, Clara and Laura, had the amazing idea to create a scavenger hunt for Megan to find the gifts from them! I came up with the clues and hiding spots (with help from my little sister), and they provided the gift package. 🙂

This is Megan’s “what-in-the-world-does-this-clue-mean” face.

post (18)

And this is her “OHHHHHHH I GOT IT” face! I LOVE THIS PICTURE.

post (20).2

To be fair, that specific clue was probably the hardest: “the rushing, gushing phone murderer with good eyesight.” :’D The explanation will come up in an Etcetera post soon, I think, but suffice it to say that she went to this part of the stream to find a map to follow for the next clue.

post (21)

When I told Megan she would need the Mule (like an ATV, not an animal) for the scavenger hunt, she was quite surprised. But why hide the clues around the house when you have a whole farm, right?

post (22)

After figuring out nine clues with only a few hints, she went to the hunting stand we nicknamed “Rivendell” after being wished a happy birthday by Elrond in the last clue. 😛 And there was the package!

post (24)

We both had fun opening or watching the opening of the gifts. Clara and Laura were generous enough to include a pretty card and washi tape for me as a thank you for doing the scavenger hunt – so sweet! ❤

post (25)

Megan QUITE enjoyed your package and the game to get it, Clara and Laura! Thanks again.

post (26)

Alright, now for her birthday party! Megan had several friends over from where we used to live, as well as from our current church over for a yellow-themed party. We had it outside, despite it being August. O.o

post (8)

We sadly didn’t have enough time to put up all the many yellow balloons they blew up while I was out for the morning, but we did put up four at the streamer ends after I took this picture. 😉 Also I do NOT know what’s going on with the tablecloth here, heh heh. It’s the first of its trials, as you will see…

post (6)

The menu was entire yellow, not surprisingly. These fruit skewers were DELICIOUS, composed of peaches, pineapple, and a canary or yellow melon.

post (2)

Pineapple jello is… interesting. It also does not photograph well, or stand up to the heat well – by the end of the party it was just a pile of mush. XD

post (4)

And here is the cake! *choir voices* 😛 Mom asked if I’d decorate it if she baked the actual cake, so I was like, “SURE.” It was quite fun, although a little trickier to blend the yellow and white than I thought – next time I’d use less yellow and mostly white to give it more of the streaky watercolored effect I was going for.

post (3)

But once topped with peaches and wildflowers, it looked lovely, if I do say so myself. 😀

post (9)

Hee hee, I love this picture too. Yellow and smiles!

post (10)

Okay, just ONE more cake picture. 😛 I had to show you the inside! This is the classic birthday cake recipe Mom uses almost every time – a yellow cake mix with sour cream and chocolate chips added in, I think.

post (11)

We played “Ultimate Musical Chairs” and a “how well do you know the birthday girl” quiz, had a snack, and then…

post (7)

Time for gifts! Oh my goodness, I took SO many pictures: Megan kept laughing at the gifts, because her friends know her well and gave her a bunch of stuff pertaining either to inside jokes, donkeys, or yellow, which are some of her favorite things. XD

post (12)

HAHAHA. Here she was groaning about the dreaded game her friends made for her – they found a weird old board game a long time ago and made one for Megan, since she didn’t want to play it. :’D

post (13)

Here she was genuinely pleased, because this, my friends, is a donkey cookie cutter. XD

post (15)

Ha ha, I love our cousin’s expression on the left – she looks even more excited than Megan, who was quite excited to get an all-yellow gift. XD

post (14)

Since Megan is notorious for absent-mindedly ripping the vinyl tablecloths at parties, we decided the last party game should be destroying the tablecloth. :’D What can I say? It seems like this picture should hold some sad hidden meaning, but I guess I’ll leave that up to you. *shakes head*

post (16)

Before everyone left, Mom took pictures with Megan’s Polaroid for each of the guests. They turned out quite blurry but cute. 🙂 For one of the pictures (not here), we attempted to make a human pyramid, but it kind of failed. Mom snapped the dark photo on the right after we had finished the rest and were laughing over them. It’s kind of hard to see, but our expressions are so great. XD

post (29)

Ahh, good memories. I hope you enjoyed virtually coming to the party with me! If you want to steal Megan’s ideas for your own party sometime, feel free to pin any of these photos for future reference!

What theme would your party be? Have you done a scavenger hunt? And do you like birthday cake? (To be honest, it’s more fun to look at than eat, in my opinion. :P)

Thanks so much for reading, dears, and have a lovely day!

  6. So much yellow! 😀 I love how you made that the theme. All your pictures are so bright and cheery. 🙂 It looks like a good time was had by all, which is great. When I was younger I would have loved to have a doll-themed party (I probably would still like it 😉 ), but now I might like to have a design related theme. And of course I like birthday cake! Well, at least the amazing chocolate cake my mom makes for our birthdays. The cake you made looked delicious, and you did a great job blending the frosting on top.

P.S. I was so glad to get your email a couple weeks ago or so, but unfortunately I probably won’t be able to reply for a few weeks, because I’m a little overloaded with art assignments right now. They’re what I like to do, but they take a lot of time.

    1. Ha ha, I KNOW! Aww, thanks! We DID have a good time, although the heat was rather tiring (for me, at least 😉 ). That sounds neat! Yummm.
      P. S. I’m so glad you got the email! And no worries about that – I honestly am pretty far behind on replying to people myself right now, so. XD I hope your assignments go well!
