Dog + Cats

Get ready for some furry cuteness, my friends! Today I have some pictures of our yellow Lab, Maggie, along with a Caption It, and lots of pictures of KITTENS! 🙂

Ready?

Set?

Go.

Let’s start with Maggie. She looks so sweet and calm in this picture! Do you see the heart she makes with her paws? ♥ SO CUTE.

dog 1 (1280x853)

I was taking pictures for my sister Megan‘s photo contest, BIBPC, and got one with Maggie in the background. 🙂

DSC_1735 (853x1280)

DSC_1741 (1280x853)DSC_1742 (1280x853)

HA HA! Maggie makes odd faces sometimes. XD I think she was licking her lips or something, but she looks like she’s in mid-snarl.

DSC_1743 (1280x853)

I love all the beautiful bokeh in these next pictures. ♥

DSC_1749 (1280x853)

DSC_1748 (1280x853)

And we shall end Maggie’s pictures with my favorite – probably my favorite I’ve ever taken of her. IS THIS NOT HILARIOUS?! AND ADORABLE?! Tell me what you think I should caption it in the comments, and I’ll announce the winner in another post. 😀

DSC_1747 (1280x853)

Now for the cats. (Just so you know, I did edit many of these a bit.) This is Whopper. 😛

cats 1 (1280x853)

I love cats’ eyes! They’re so pretty and round.

cats 2 (1280x853)

Speaking of pretty eyes, take a look at Violet’s eyes! ♥

cats 3 (1280x853)cats 4 (1280x853)cats 5 (1280x853)

Okay, now for the wittle kittens. 😀 I believe this is Bubbles (my little sister named him XD), but I’m not certain.

cats 6 (1280x853)

cats 9 (1000x667)

We named this little guy Fuzzer Jr., after a cat that looked just like him that my grandmother used to have.

cats 7 (1280x853)

AWW! I love this picture!

cats 8 (1280x1227)

IS THIS NOT THE CUTEST?!

DSC_1102 (1280x853)And then we have Tiny Tina…

DSC_1095 (1280x853)DSC_1096 (1280x853)DSC_1099 (1280x853)

And here’s one of little Louis. I think there’s another one or two kittens, but apparently I didn’t get very good pictures of them. :/

DSC_1108 (1280x853)

And last but not least, a couple of pictures of this sweet but startled-looking kitty that showed up at our house. I’m not sure where he’s from. Oh, and Carmen named him Thomas, Tom for short. 😉

DSC_1721 (1280x853)

Such stunning eyes! Rather shocked-looking, but pretty. 😛

cats 11 (1280x853)

And there’s your dose of cuteness for the day! Which picture was your favorite? Do you like cats or dogs better, and why? I like cats better because they’re more soft and clean and you can hold them, but I like the pictures of Maggie better in this post.

P. S. Are you guys ready for another art post, or should I do the second vacation post first?

Books, Blooms, and Bales {Portrait Photography}

Megan and I did a super fun photoshoot of each other yesterday and got tons of great pictures! We had way too much fun figuring out creative ways to pose for each other. I’ve tried (and mostly failed) to narrow them down for you guys. Whoops.

Photo credits to my sister Megan. (And assistance credits to me. Heh heh.)

Okay, buckle up, ’cause this is going to be a loooong post.

We started in the barn, since haybales make awfully good props.

Amelia Island Part 1

We just got back from a lovely vacation with our friends at Amelia Island, Florida. Of course I took hundreds of pictures, and thusly I’m going to divide this into two posts, heh heh. Get ready for a huge photo dump!

Pictures from the drive there…

DSC_1174 (1280x853)DSC_1175 (1280x853)DSC_1181 (1280x853)

My siblings counted different kinds of trailers on the way there and back, keeping tally with a dry-erase marker on the window. They got a lot more than this till the trip was over. 🙂 (And yes, they did manage to get one truck honk in the end. XD)

DSC_1185 (1280x853)

Now we’re at the island! The trees at the resort are GORGEOUS, all old and gnarly, and covered in ferns and dripping with Spanish moss. It makes the whole place look really neat and mysterious.

DSC_1189 (1280x853)DSC_1192 (1280x853)

And now for tons of beach pictures! You will be proud of me, guys: I managed not to ruin my camera this time like I have at pretty much every other beach vacation. XD

Going down the boardwalk…

DSC_1200 (1280x853)

Look what we found!

This beach is absolutely gorgeous. ♥

Isn’t this neat? You can’t see it too well in the picture, but I found a hollowed out shell that fit me perfectly as a ring, like it was made for me! Maybe it was. 🙂 Wow, my fingers look weirdly long in this picture. O.o Probably because they are.

And we’ll end with this cute little tree frog we found stuck to a window of the beach house. He’s all tucked into a little frog package. 😛

tree frog

Whew! Done with the first part! I hope you enjoyed. But I have to say, I think the rest of the pictures are even better. 😉 I can’t wait to show you!

What is your favorite part of the beach? The waves? The sand? The shells?

Thanks for visiting and see you later, dear readers! 😀

Farewell, Baby Bunnies

WARNING: EXTREME CUTENESS ALERT. If you read this post, I can almost guarantee you’ll want a baby bunny… immediately. Read at your own risk. 😛

The other day we sold one of the baby bunnies (Herbert Naninger). It won’t be long till the rest of them go too, most likely. So this *might* be the last baby bunny post for a while. 😦

Anyway, I did take some pretty cute pictures of the ones we’re selling before Herbert left! Actually, “pretty cute” isn’t quite strong enough. I’d say “extremely adorable” sounds more accurate.

Care to have a look?

DSC_0959 (1280x853)

AWW DOESN’T HERB LOOK ADORABLE?!

DSC_0954 (1280x853)DSC_0960 (1280x853)DSC_0963 (1280x853)DSC_0964 (1280x853)DSC_0965 (1280x853)DSC_0967 (1280x853)

Sister and brother. 🙂

DSC_0969 (1280x853)

The bunnies are SO cute when they stand up and look around like this, aren’t they?

DSC_0970 (1280x853)DSC_0984 (853x1280)

And they’re ALSO so cute when they wash their faces. (Excuse my little sister’s leg. I was too lazy to crop it out. XD)

DSC_0987 (853x1280)

AWW! Ugh, it would have been a perfect picture if Carmen’s knee hadn’t photobombed it. 😦 *Sigh* Oh well.

DSC_0993 (1280x853)DSC_0994 (1280x853)DSC_0996 (1280x853)DSC_0997 (1280x853)

Starring: Herbert Naninger. Also Starring: Allison’s hair. 😛

DSC_1000 (1280x853)DSC_1002 (853x1280)DSC_1003 (853x1280)DSC_1005 (853x1280)

AWWW doesn’t that picture just make you want to squish his (I mean her) fuzzy body? They are sooo soft. I definitely took the most pictures of Herb this time. She’s just so photogenic and sweet, not to mention that was practically the last chance I had.

DSC_1006 (853x1280)

I kept putting Herb down so I could get a better picture of her but she insisted on hopping back into my lap. ♥

DSC_1007 (1280x853)

My sweet little Ginger. 😀

DSC_1011 (853x1280)

As I’ve said before, it’s kind of hard to get good pictures of Mulberry because she’s so dark. That’s why the exposure is kind of off in this photo. But she’s still cute. 🙂

DSC_1012 (853x1280)DSC_1013 (1280x853)

Heh heh, Herb eating grass. XD

DSC_1014 (1280x853)DSC_1015 (1280x853)DSC_1016 (1280x853)

AHHHHH!

DSC_1017 (1280x853)DSC_1018 (1280x853)DSC_1019 (1280x853)

Bwahahahaha is this photo not hilarious? I think he was twisting his head just as I snapped the picture. XD

DSC_1021 (853x1280)

Bunny paws… ♥

DSC_1022 (853x1280)DSC_1023 (1280x853)

Poor Mulberry. Almost all her photos are either too dark or too light. 😦

DSC_1024 (1280x853)

And we’re done. Which photo was your favorite, if you had one? Did you survive the cuteness overdose? I certainly hope so! Where would this blog be without all my dear readers?

***Allison***

P. S. I’ve been meaning to do these shoutouts for a long time but I keep forgetting!

Anyway, guys, you should really check out Livy’s magazine, Christ’s Light. It is SO good and encouraging and interesting! Click here to see the first issue and here to see the second, and be sure to subscribe for more. (Psst, I also sometimes contribute some art or articles to the magazine. 😉 )

Also, while you’re clicking links, you should check out Olivia’s blog! She blogs about music, with a sprinkling of gorgeous photography, her faith, and lifestyle too. 🙂

P. P. S. I’m also participating in Loren’s CWWC writing challenge (yes, I know I that meant “Writing Challenge writing challenge” XD). Instead of posting each thing I write as a post, I’m putting them all on this page. I hope you’re in the mood for links today. XD Which story is your favorite so far?

Phew that was a lot of links!

Thoughts on… {Beauty}

Imagine I give you a gift. It’s huge and beautifully wrapped in your favorite color of wrapping paper and topped with a perfect bow. It promises to be wonderful, but when you shred the paper and tear open the box, there is nothing inside. The box is empty.

DSC_0873 (1280x853)

Beauty is our wrapping paper. It can make a good present even better and add to our enjoyment, but beautiful wrapping paper alone is not worth anything.

DSC_0874 (1280x853)

Sadly, our culture seems to focus on our wrapping paper almost to the exclusion of the gift inside. The world whispers that if you are beautiful, everyone will love you, you will feel great, and life will be perfect.

DSC_0876 (1280x853)

And that’s certainly a handy way to get people to buy makeup, skin products, hair products, brand name clothes, and all the other things that the world says you simply must have in order to be beautiful.

DSC_0890 (1280x853)

But that is a lie. You do not need to have the perfect face or figure or clothes to be happy, hard as that might be to believe. Your Creator made you beautiful from the first, and He is the only one who will bring you ultimate joy.

DSC_0891 (1280x853)

My dear, you are beautiful even when you skip your makeup. Each and every one of us, boy or girl, man or woman, is beautiful because we are made in God’s image, and God is Beauty itself.

DSC_0893 (1280x853)

Here’s another story. A boy was born blind. Eventually he grew into a man and fell in love with a woman who was always kind to him. Though he could not see her face, he felt her heart, and she was beautiful to him.

DSC_0865 (1280x853)

One day, after they were married, the man was given a chance to get his vision back with a surgery. The surgery was successful, and at last the man could see! Everything was so bright and colorful it hurt his eyes. The first person he saw was his wife, who had been waiting for him all throughout the surgery.

DSC_0867 (1280x853)

What would he have thought? He wouldn’t mind if she weighed too much or didn’t have makeup on or didn’t have clear skin. He had only known her for her heart and her actions. He would think her beautiful.

DSC_0894 (1280x853)

Now I’m not saying beauty is a bad thing. In fact, God gave us a beautiful world to live in for our pleasure and his glory. Neither am I saying that you can only be either beautiful or good, because that’s not true. I’m just saying don’t lose the gift for the box. Don’t put so much store in your outward appearance that you don’t take care of your heart.

DSC_0872 (1280x853)

Think about it. What would the world be like if everyone took the time they spent getting the wrapping paper perfect and instead focused it on touching up the gift inside?

The Art Lab, Episode 30: Simple Face Drawing Tutorial

Halloo, guys! I’m excited to present a simple tutorial for drawing faces! 😀 I’ve heard a lot of you say “I CANNOT draw people” or “faces are SO hard,” and you know what? I kinda agree. People can be really hard to draw. But you can do it! Today I’m going to show you an easy way to draw a face with just a pencil and paper, and then I’ll show you some different combinations you can use to get all sorts of interesting characters. 🙂

So. To begin, here’s how to draw an average, boring face without looking off a photo of a person. XD (I – and probably you too – can draw a better face when looking off of a picture, but sometimes you just want to make up something, right?)

Ahem.

Technique: Drawing Faces

Step One:

Sketch out an upside-down egg shape for the face and two short curved lines below for a neck. A grid like this is nice if you need help with the placement of the features (like I do). Just draw a vertical line down the middle of the face and a horizontal one between a half and a third down the face. You can see that my sketch is far from perfect, but that’s okay. We’ll touch it up as we go.

face 1 (853x1280)

Step Two:

Using the grid, draw two oval or almond-shaped eyes. (You can add more grid lines if you like, but you don’t need to.) Eyes are usually smaller than you think, at least in my case. I drew these a bit too big. Getting them symmetrical is hard, but you know what? In reality, no one’s eyes are perfectly symmetrical – look in the mirror!

face 2 (953x1280)

Step Three:

One common mistake made when drawing eyes is to draw the iris as a whole circle. Unless you are surprised or unusually pop-eyed, you won’t be able to see the whole iris. So make your circle go off the eyeball, like this:

face 3 (1280x853)

Step Four:

Draw a tiny circle towards one side for the highlight, and a bigger, filled-in circle (or dot) for the pupil. Also draw a curved line above and below each eye for the eyelids.

face 4 (1280x853)

Step Five:

Draw the eyelashes. This can be pretty tricky, and I think I drew too many eyelashes here. From far away, you can only see a few individual spikes of eyelashes, not a whole fringe. (Again, look in the mirror if you need help.)

face 5 (1280x853)

Step Six:

Heh heh, this would usually be where you color in the irises, but I kind of forgot about it until step ten. XD You can skip to there now if you’d like or just do it later.

Anyway, now we need the nose. Draw two curved lines (kind of like you did with the neck) for the bridge of the nose, and two parentheses-like curved lines below it. How far apart you make them determines how big the nose is, as well as how far down on the face you put them.

face 6 (1280x853)

Step Seven:

Curve your parentheses around a bit more to look like “C’s” facing each other. Then connect the bottoms with a wide curve or “U.”

face 7 (1280x853)

Step Eight:

For the top of the lips, make a flattened “M” shape, which I think looks kind of like a flying bird. 🙂

face 8 (1280x1178)

Step Nine:

Connect the two ends of the “M” with a long curve. You can make it almost flat or very arched depending on how full you want the lips to be. Draw a line in the middle that echoes the curves of the top lip line.

face 9 (1280x853)

Step Ten:

Now I remembered to color in the eyes. XD A simple way to do this is to color a dark line around the outside of the iris and fill it in with lighter pencil. Make sure to darken especially the top of the iris to make it look more realistic.

face 11 (1280x853)

Step Eleven:

Now for the hair, which I am pretty terrible at. XD Oh well, you can tell it’s hair at least.

Using the face shape sketch you did at the very beginning, curve the hair around the head like so. (I decided to make the head a little shorter than I had originally sketched.) For this hairstyle, I kind of drew two elongated teardrop or comma shapes that meet at the middle line of the face grid.

Also now is the time to define the face shape at the jaw and chin. You kind of just have to play around with this part and experiment. A more round, curved jawline will look like a younger face, and a sharper, more angular jawline will look older or more masculine.

face 12 (1195x1280)

Step Twelve:

Start shading the hair. WAIT, DON’T PANIC BECAUSE I SAID SHADING. This is very simple. Draw darker, closer together lines beside the neck and at the top of the head, and lighter, farther apart lines for the rest of the hair. Don’t draw many lines at all at the top sides of the head, which will make the hair look more shiny and highlighted. Leave a little gap where the two sides of the hair meet for a part. Or just look at the picture and figure it out for yourself. XD

face 14 (853x1280)

Step Thirteen:

Finish shading the hair. Also *facepalm* I almost forgot the eyebrows. XD Oh well, you can add those sooner or later, it doesn’t really matter. But you should add them or the face will look kind of weird and blank. Eyebrows are simple: just draw a bunch or really short, slightly curved lines. Or you can draw just a single curved line for an even simpler, less realistic version.

Lastly, erase any grid lines and smudges, add shading around the face and under the neck if you want to (you don’t have to), and you’re done! Ta-da!

To tell the truth, this isn’t my best portrait. The face is too round, the eyes are too big… but that’s alright. This is what you have to do – if it doesn’t turn out good the first time, do it a second… and a third, and a fourth. 🙂

face 16 (916x1280)

Now since you know how to put everything together, here are some ways to change up the facial features. It’s so fun to try different combinations!

Here’s another Art Lab post I did on how to draw eyes: Episode 23.

faces 6 (909x1280)

Have fun mixing and matching! Also before you go, I wanted to show you a colored pencil face drawing I did off of different pictures. You can tell I do a lot better when I look off of something. XD

Which little cutie is your favorite?

girls drawing (1024x377).jpg

Well, I hope you found this tutorial helpful! Would you like me to do another face tutorial, like maybe how to do colored pencil portraits or profile portraits or an easier or harder version? What do you want to learn how to draw? Maybe I can do the next Art Lab from one of your suggestions!

Thanks for reading, dears, and have fun drawing!

Raindrops {Photo Dump} + A Favor?

Some days I step outside, look around, and go right back in for my camera because it’s too beautiful not to. I love just walking around, taking pictures of the little beauties I find. Because that’s how to be a good photographer, you know. You have to go looking for photo opportunities, not just wait for them to find you.

Sometimes the best photos are of the little things no one else takes time to notice. I like to think that through your camera lens, anything can be beautiful. ♥ Even thorns.

Pictures, Etc.

Ugh, I really need better names for these posts. XD Suggestions?

Annnyway, since you guys seem to enjoy random photography posts I enjoy posting them, I figured – let’s do more! 😀

****************

It had just rained and there was an interesting orangish tint to everything outside, different than the golden hour usually looks because it was so cloudy.

DSCN1665 (1280x960)

Ahh, beautiful rain drops.

DSCN1666 (1280x960)DSCN1667 (1280x960)

Maggie waded into the field, looking noble. XD

HA HA look at her expression.

DSCN1674 (1280x960)

Okay, this picture might be a bit startling… You have been warned. 😛 He looks pretty angry, doesn’t he (or she)? This snapping turtle appeared in our lane one day and Maggie nearly went crazy. Snapping turtles are weird, ugly creatures. Blech.

DSCN1687 (1280x960)

Ahem. Let’s move on to cuter pictures… LIKE BABY BUNNIES EEEEE! This is the photoshoot I did to get pictures for selling them. *Sniff* Anyone want to buy a baby bunny? 😉

AHHH THEY’RE SO CUTE I CAN’T STAND IT.

And Ginger…

And Herbert Naninger. 🙂 SO. CUTE. (Also if you’re wondering why Basil isn’t on here, it’s because we’re keeping her! So I didn’t need pictures for the listing.)

ISN’T THIS THE CUTEST?!

DSC_0784 (1280x853)DSC_0786 (1280x853)

Okay, after all that cuteness you might need an antidote so you don’t get too overwhelmed. Ready for another slightly creepy picture? Here we go.

DSCN1808 (1280x960)

XD Praying mantises are so weird. I got this interesting picture of one cleaning itself when we were studying them in Nature Study.

DSCN1816 (1280x960)

While we’re on the subject of bugs, Megan found three black swallowtail caterpillars outside and we took them inside to watch. We both got some neat pictures of the first one that hatched! 😀 Aren’t butterflies delightful creatures?

And that’s it for today, dears! What was your favorite picture or category? Thanks for reading and have a lovely day. ♥

Gone Camping

Last weekend we went on a camping trip with my Dad’s side of the family, and it was so much fun! My camera still isn’t working the best, but I did manage to get a few decent pictures.

DSC_0806 (1280x853) 1.jpg

We got to the campground in the evening so we didn’t do much after that besides set up. Megan and I shared a really nice tent with our two cousins. Although we did play the most confusing game of Uno ever. XD We played the “interrupting” version where you can lay down a card that’s exactly the same (same number and color) as the one someone else just laid down even if it’s not your turn. Anyway, when we laid down several skips or draw-twos or reverses in a row it got quite complicated, XD Have you ever played Interrupting Uno?

DSC_0795 (1280x853)

Unfortunately the ground under our tent was quite bumpy and rocky and sloping, and my sleeping bag didn’t provide much protection… so I didn’t sleep that well the first night. XD But oh well.

DSC_0797 (1280x853)

The next morning we had a delicious breakfast of pancake and sausages and bacon cooked over a combination of a camp cookstove and a bonfire. YUM.

DSC_0831 (853x1280)

The next day started out extremely hot until a huge rainstorm came in the afternoon. The kids rushed to a pavilion nearby and had fun playing games until it stopped raining. My little sister Carmen got scared of all the thunder though, poor girl. :/

DSC_0805 (1280x853)

In the afternoon we went down to the pool which was huge and the perfect temperature, if a bit dirty. All of us except my uncle played a couple of exhilarating games of water polo. It was SO much fun and we all laughed so hard. XD (And my team won both times, heh heh.)

Unfortunately, the floor of the pool was rough concrete and almost all of us skinned our toes and feet up pretty badly what with pushing off hard and running through the water. We had to break out the Band-Aids and gauze when we got back to the campsite and even then we were limping around. XD It would have been pretty hilarious if it wasn’t so painful… well actually, it was still pretty hilarious. 😛 Kind of a strange way to injure yourself, huh?

DSC_0808 (1280x853)

In the evening we had a bonfire and hot dog roast – and s’mores, of course. My uncle also popped some popcorn over the fire and it was AMAZING! It was some of the best popcorn I have ever tasted! His recipe was 1/3 cup of popcorn to 1/4 cup of oil, I think, with a pinch of salt.

DSC_0824 (1280x853)

The cicadas and/or tree frogs were really loud, but in a peaceful kind of way. It was so nice just to be sitting around the fire with family and talking and eating popcorn. 🙂

DSC_0815 (1280x853)

We bought air mattresses for the second night which felt luxurious compared to sleeping bags. XD I know, I need to toughen up – but I have like NO extra padding on my body which doesn’t help anything. XD

DSC_0798 (1280x853)

We had scrambled eggs and chocolate muffins and bacon for the last breakfast. YUM AGAIN. (Hmm, this post seems to feature a lot of food, doesn’t it? XD )

We then went down and played around at the Gaga pit and swings and rock climbing wall and stuff, but it was so hot we didn’t do it for long.

Before we left we went to the pool one last time and tried not to scrape open our blisters. Eheh heh… dear me.

And then we left! All in all it was a pretty fun time. 😀

Have you gone camping this summer? What is some of your favorite campfire food? What do you like to do best while camping?
