I used to despise most poetry, especially unrhyming poetry. But now… now I actually kind of like it! It lets you look at the world in a different way. And I have to admit, it’s pretty fun to write. đ I decided to share a few of my poems today, which I hope you enjoy. I’m not very experienced with poem-writing so any tips or constructive criticism is welcome. đ

poems
poems slip on tinted glasses
and make you look at everything
upside down and sideways
until you don’t know where you started
and even the plainest, dullest things
are something new and wonderful.
bonfire
warm, nimble fingers
grabbing for a hold
on slippery branches, paper, sticks
then giving up
and sliding down again,
but leaving black scars
to mark their path.
hungry flames
licking with soft strokes
melting the wood
with warm tongues.
a burning sunset in a ring of stones.
art
the language of imagination.
art is spoken not
with verbs and nouns
but with brushstrokes
and colors
and lines.
art is spoken not
with the mouth,
but with the fingertips;
not only with the mind,
but with the soul.
some people are fluent from birth
and some must work
to master it,
but like all languages,
anyone can learn.
pool
there is nothing quite like
a pool, with its
liquid burden of blue
which wraps around you
like an cool blanket
and holds you up
on its strong, soft back.
when you plunge beneath
the surface, you enter another world:
still, silent,
save for the whisper of
your body as it
glides through
the water.
pools are
freckles and brown arms
and pink shoulders
where the sunscreen was too thin;
bubbles swimming to the surface
like fragile jellyfish;
sunbeams dancing together
in intricate patterns,
a web of yellow light
shifting and shimmering
in the cool blue water;
a place where everything
moves in slow motion.
vacation
a few days of
condensed work
for a few days of
condensed memories.
piano
a funny language
with an alphabet
of dots and lines.
its sentences are
spoken not with
the tongue, but
with the fingers;
not with the mind,
but with the soul.
playing piano is
reading a beautiful
story out loud with
your fingertips, a
story sung by the
heart of the composer
and captured forever
on a white paper page.
little things
a dew drop hanging
from a blade of grass,
poised for a dive.
a perfect blossom,
opening it’s shy face
to the world.
a set of brilliant colored pencils,
lined up like colorful soldiers
in their square tin.
a sunset burning up the sky
one flaming cloud at a time.
a basket of vegetables
sun-warmed and fresh picked.
i sometimes think
the best things come in
small packages.
don’t you?
the sound of summer
the deep bass of bullfrogs,
the cymbal clash of thunder,
the low roar of a lawn mower,
the staccato pop of canning jars sealing,
the juicy crunch of a watermelon slice,
the splash of a rock thrown into water,
the buzzing crescendo of cicadas,
the shrill soprano chirp of crickets,
the sweet melody of birdsong,
all weave together,
into a beautiful symphony:
the sound of summer.
That was fun! And yes, I am aware that the “art” and “piano” poems are very similar – almost exactly the same in some parts. But I couldn’t bear to change those parts out and I wanted to share both of them. XD
Which poem was your favorite? Do you like non-rhyming poetry?
***Allison***
P. S. Guys, you should really check out Hayley’s ATC trade! She needs a few more people to sign up before the trade is worthwhile to do, so if you like art, you should definitely look into it! đ And in case you’re wondering, I’ll be doing the trade too. đ
AJLDKJKALSDKJ these poems are SO cute and lovely!! Also the photos are PERFECT HELP. XDD

Thanks for sharing! Your style is fun and light-hearted, I like reading your poems. I love this blog, and don’t do anything you don’t want to, this is just my opinion. Maybe you should write in a post or two that’s personal about you or something with depth. Not saying anything about your blog, it’s really great! But it just might add another level of depth with readers.

i don’t particularly like rhyming poetry. it usually feels too forced. i think free verse better allows you to get everything down.

AHHHH LOREN COMMENTED YAYAYAYAY! XD đ
But seriously, thank you so much, Loren! I’m really glad you liked them. đ
Yeah, I agree. Although sometimes rhyming poetry can make for a more fun, light-hearted poem, you don’t just naturally go around speaking in rhyming couplets. XD

I totally agree about the rhyming poetry part–I usually enjoy writing free verses, because then I get a bit more freedom in writing whatever I like. When it comes to rhyming, you have to plan all those ending words, just so they’ll rhyme.

These are so beautiful! I love the art one especially. ⤠I think poetry is SUCH an underrated form of writing. I used to write more of it but don't now; I really need to get into it again though! And OMG DID YOU TAKE THOSE PHOTOS YOURSELF BECAUSE đđđ

Aww thank youuuu! Yes, I really like the art one too. đ Yeah, I really like how poetry is a way to explore things in a new light. It does that in a way prose can’t do without sounding unnatural.
Ha ha, yep, I sure did take those photos! (I edited them a little though.) I’m so glad you like them!

Yaaaay, you like writing poems now? Awesomeeee. ;)) They were really nice to read, btw!! And I usually don’t write rhyming poems? I usually do blank and free verses, cuz I’m just too lazy and it’s not my style to rhyme. xD

Hee hee, it does appear so! đ And thank you! Ha ha, yep, that’s the other nice thing about blank verse – it’s not as hard to write. XD

I love your poem about the pool. Your choice of words there was great. Also, I disagree with you when you say art is not spoken. Poetry, like what you’ve shared with us, is art. But I get where you’re coming from. Those poems are beautiful pieces of art btw. đ

Thank you so much!
Oh, and good point! Art, broadly speaking, can be lots of things – writing, music, woodworking, sewing, etc. But yeah, I was just talking about the more narrow meaning of art, as in drawing and painting. đ
Thanks for the comment!

I never liked non rhyming poetry before, but I do now!!!!! Yours at least! That was SO BEAUTIFUL! I loved every one of them! Thank you so much for sharing those with us! I know sometimes people (myself included) get nervous to share things with others (especially with you having like 3000 followers) cause they don’t know what they’ll think, but that was MAGNIFICENTLY EXTRAORDINARY!!!! I loved them soooooo much! They were ALL so beautiful and VERY true!!! đ The art one was great! And I love the way you worded some of the parts about the pool one! The sounds of summer was also very pretty and makes me very thankful for the beauty God put around us! Thanks again Allison!!!! Those were SO beautiful! I deeply enjoyed reading them!
PLEASE POST MORE POEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww thank you again SO much! Yeah, I definitely understand that – I didn’t really like free verse poems or whatever but there’s this really neat poem book called “all the small poems and fourteen more” that has non-rhyming poetry. It’s really clever and neat and I think that book is partly when I started liking non-rhyming poetry. Also some bloggers do some really good poetry like that, so yeah!
Ha ha, actually I don’t know either. XD It’s funny because I usually start writing a poem and then it kind finishes writing itself! XD
Okay, I WILL! Thank you so much for your encouragement, K. A.!

Yeah… That sounds cool…. đ
Haha! XD I know what you mean! That’s how stories are for me! If I start writing them, they usually just write themselves and end up being NOTHING like what I was planning them to be about! đ The one I most recently started writing is about something TOTALLY different than I thought it would be about cause my fingers just take over and write something! XD đ It was going to be about two brothers on a hike and ended up being about them driving somewhere but coming back because there was a storm and their sister was kidnapped… pretty different! XD
