A Flock of Feathers

Hello, dears!

On Easter weekend, we finally did it. We brought back seven hens to start a little flock at our farm. We’ve been enjoying our break from the poultry houses we owned at our old farm, but we decided seven chickens wouldn’t be that much work, and we go through about three dozen eggs a week, so… yeah, they will come in handy. 😉

All the hens are pretty young, some in the pullet stage and some almost ready to lay, so we haven’t gotten any eggs yet. But it’s been fun taming them and watching them… and taking pictures. 😉 They’re so much prettier and nicer than the boring old broiler-breeders we had at our poultry houses, ha ha!

I hope you enjoy meeting our new “pets,” my friends!

Since there are only seven chickens, I’ll introduce them individually. 😉 This is Frightful, Megan’s tiny chicken. She’s not frightful-looking at all, but Megan named her that because the feather pattern reminded her of a hawk’s, which reminded her of Frightful the falcon in the My Side of the Mountain books. 🙂

1

Ha ha, I take that back – maybe Frightful IS a little terrifying, at least when she tries to escape. XD

2

Next we have Buttercup, Carmen’s hen. (Carmen is my youngest sister and chicken-wrangler for this photoshoot. 😛 ) Buttercup is also quite small, and pretty sweet. She looks rather perturbed in this picture, though.

4

Chicken eyes are so… glaring, aren’t they? :’D

6

Next we have Emma Jean, Logan’s chicken (or at least the one he picked out, although he doesn’t exactly shower it with affection :’D). In case you’re wondering, Megan inspired the name. I don’t know where it came from, but I think it fits this hen pretty well. 🙂

8

Emma Jean is a Rhode Island Red, I believe – just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill backyard chicken. But I love red chickens like this! They seem so classic and pretty.

10

Next up is my chicken, Charlotte. I really like black and white speckled chickens too. They look so classy and dignified. XD

13

Oh my, this is a strange angle for a chicken. Actually many angles are strange… I don’t think chickens are the most photogenic. 😛

12

Ha ha, I love Carmen’s hair blowing in the wind in the background.

14

This is Edna, Jeff’s chicken. (Named for Edna in The Incredibles movies, heh.) She’s not the most tame, but with Carmen’s help, I managed to get a couple of pictures.

16

He wanted a black chicken from the beginning, so that’s what he picked. Actually, Edna has some pretty brown-centered feathers that make her look much more unique. (And I’m sorry, I don’t remember the breeds of all of these chickens. Let me know if you know!)

17

This is Skye, who is so named because she’s supposed to lay blue-tinted eggs. HA HA, isn’t Carmen’s expression great? XD

18

I really like this picture. ❤

19

Skye has a crest of feathers, if you haven’t noticed. It looks a bit odd, but we’ll keep her anyway. 😛

20

Lastly, we have Matilda. This poor girl wasn’t named for several days, until Dad interposed into our discussion and said, “What about Matilda?” So we all looked at each other and said, “SURE.” The name seems fitting, somehow, but also kind of amusing for a chicken. 😛

23

I really like Matilda’s feathers. They’re kind of ombre – red-brown on her head, fading to gray on her body.

24

We shall end with another of my favorites. Somehow Carmen’s pose and quiet expression makes this picture look really sweet to me. ❤

25

And now you are up-to-date on all our pets, I think. 😀 I hope you enjoyed getting to meet our new feathered flock!

Which hen was your favorite? What photo did you like the best? Do you have chickens at home?

Thank you so much for reading, dears, and have a lovely day!

  1. Aww, how sweet! They all are so cute! We used to have chickens, but unfortunately, we had a big wind storm that wrecked their little coop, so we gave them away to friends. XD

  2. I’ve always dreamt of owning chickens! 😉 It’s now become a class joke at my homeschool group that my mom does not care for chickens. In public speaking class, one person did a persuasive speech on why you should get a chicken. Haha! We recorded it, and the very next week, my mom said it really persuaded her so much that she bought chickens (she bought plastic chicks to give to the class.) LOL!

I love that you all named the chickens and they are like pets. ❤ Emma Jean is my personal favorite from the pictures. Matilda also makes me laugh, haha! 🙂 I loved seeing these photos! So fun!!

  3. Oh also, what lens did you use for these pics? Was it a 50mm? Always curious about photography, you know? 😉 😛

  4. AHHHH CHICKENS! I think I like yours best. Also those are all great names! I like Emma Jean the best, though. I’m not sure why…it just seems like a classic, southernish name. And a little vintage. XD And ooh, I really like that picture you liked too!

    1. YESSS CHICKENS. Why thank you! Charlotte is pleased. And yeah, I love the name Emma Jean too – for the same reasons. And thank you again!

  5. Congratulations on the new pets! My favorite was the Rhode Island Red. My family has about two dozen, if not more, chickens. My oldest younger brother (He’s the one right under me. I’m the oldest of all my nine siblings.) really loves chickens. He will hold and pet them like they are cats. He can tame the wildest of roosters and treats his chicks like queens. Maybe I’m getting a little carried away with that last part but seriously, he loves those chicks (they’re really more like hens now.) He’s really good at catching them too. As for me, I don’t really like eggs. Chickens are nice especially when they make inquisitive sounds.

  6. CHICKENS I LOVE CHICKENS!!! *Goes to read the post now, I just got really excited when I saw it.:)* Aww Charlotte is the kind I always pick for my chickens, a Barred Rock. If you ever get anymore, you should get some Buff Orpingtons, all the ones we’ve ever owned have had the sweetest personalities ever. One even climbs into our laps! Right now we have 14 chickens, but we’re about to drop off several we discovered are roosters. 🐔

  8. I’d never think of chickens as pretty, but these are. They’re different from the regular backyard chickens I see all the time.
