Hello, dears!
Now that it’s August, time for my obligatory seasonal playlist post. ๐ I usually do these earlier, but I had too many other post ideas, heh. I love discovering new music and artists and I know you guys do too, so today I’m going to share some of my recent favorites with a summery feel.
I hope you guys enjoy this playlist + photos, and maybe find some music to add to your collection!
Note: Iโll link to YouTube videos of these songs, but you can also pull up all of these on Spotify.
Don’t have a choice
But I get stuck decidin’
I am a man in need of
A constant revival
Jesus, come quickly
I need You for my survival
survival โ NEEDTOBREATHE // NEEDTOBREATHE recently put out new music YAYAYAYAY! Isn’t it the best when your favorite artists put out an album? This is probably my favorite of the new songs – I love how the earnest, slightly sad lyrics contrast with upbeat, energetic music because isn’t that life??
And oh, when the fire burns out and the embers all die,
we still have all our stories,
like stars in the sky.
And we will always remember how we lit up the night.
twinkling lights – ANNALISE EMERICK // This song is practically the epitome of a soft summer aesthetic. I love acoustic songs like this. The way she sings + the lyrics feels so cozy and nostalgic, like… well, just like the story she’s singing about. ๐
Singers harmonize ’til they can’t hear anything
I thought that I was free from all that questionin’
But every time a problem ends, another one begins
harmony hall – SWITCHFOOT // Switchfoot, another favorite artist, also put out a new album (of covers). These lyrics really make you think – I’m not sure I quite understand them even after hearing them multiple times. XD But I think this song is summed up in the line, “singers harmonize ’til they can’t hear anything.” We tend to drown out opposing voices by staying in our bubble of people who agree with us.
Tell me somethin’, girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin’ else you’re searchin’ for?
shallow – MAT & SAVANNA SHAW // Okay, let me say that I am not a fan of mainstream pop in general, heh. I just love this version of the song because OH MY WORD THEIR VOICES! Click the link up there to watch the video of this daddy-daughter duet. You’re welcome for making you watch all of their videos now. XD I’ve been just a little obsessed with Mat & Savanna’s music recently…
And I am the moon with no light of my own
Still you have made me to shine
And as I glow in this cold dark night
I know I can’t be a light unless I turn my face to you
you are the sun – SARA GROVES // The music and chords in this one are so unique and lovely! As with most of my favorites, I love both the music and the lyrics. Sara Groves is a Christian artist with music kind of like Andrew Peterson’s: often understated, soft music with powerful, poetic lyrics.
Tomorrow-mountain we will climb
Tonight the stars and fire shine
In our eyes
In the wood
Weโre alive
fire by night – JOSH GARRELS // It took me a while to get past Josh Garrel’s very unique voice, but now I love quite a few of his songs. He has some really creative melodies and lyrics. A few other favorites are “Butterfly,” “Zion & Babylon,” and “Heaven’s Knife.” This one has a similar aesthetic/feel to “Twinkling Lights” as mentioned above.
Give me yourย armsย for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see
give me your eyes – BRANDON HEATH // Okay so a lot of you have probably heard this one multiple times by now. XD I first heard it years ago on the radio (probably gathering eggs at the poultry houses on our previous farm ๐ ), but recently rediscovered it. I relate to the lyrics so much.
He saw a hope that I did not see
He saw a better way
And the unbelievable thing about the story I tell
Is that you don’t even know my name
story i tell – MICAH TYLER // This one is a fun road-trippy song with a super upbeat tune. I love how many stories of healing he includes in this one! It reminds me of “The Chosen” show on YouTube. Have you watched it? It’s so well done!
See, I, I want a lady I can put stock in
I want a bass and back beat to lock in
I wanna know real love’s not forgotten, not forgotten
the pocket – ANDY GRAMMER // This one’s pretty different. AND SO CATCHY, oh my! Andy Grammer has a lot of catchy songs. Also I looked it up and apparently “the pocket” refers to the way rhythms fit together in music. That makes much more sense. So he’s singing about finding a girl that fits perfectly with him. The music is just so much fun to listen to. ๐
Burr, we studied and we fought and we killed
For the notion of a nation we now get to build
For once in your life, take a stand with pride
I don’t understand how you stand to the side
non-stop – FROM “HAMILTON” // First of all, most of you have probably heard this song by now. ๐ If not, just a warning: this song is clean but the musical it comes from is NOT. Unfortunately. I recently watched Hamilton on Disney+ with some friends and it was AMAZING! I really wish there wasn’t all that language and content in there because it’s not exactly family friendly, but it’s so impressive and fun to listen to and just BRILLIANT otherwise.
Dark days are gonna go away
They won’t have the final say
These bones were always gonna fade
‘Cause we were made for another place
live on forever – THE AFTERS // This one’s a cheerful, upbeat song that always makes me feel hopeful and happy. The music is not particularly unique, but I still like it. We need a reminder like this about now, am I right?
Oh, I heard that spreading hate is easy
And kindness is beneath me
But that ain’t so
And I heard that God ainโt worth believing
And hearts are made for keeping
But that ain’t so
what makes the world – THE NEW RESPECTS // I just discovered this band the other day. Most of the songs are a little too… I don’t know, a little much for my taste, but this one’s fun. Catchy, again. Fun, catchy, and upbeat seem like good words to describe summer music, yes? ๐
no words, duh XD
movement II (instrumental) – THE CORNER ROOM // I usually put instrumental songs in a separate playlist, but I added this to my main one because the music is super interesting and complex even without words. It’s currently one of my favorite instrumental tracks. Also check out the non-instrumental version of this and their music in general for some really neat, Scripture-based songs.
when the sun rose up
there were scars on his hands and feet
my soul, Lord,
my skin, my bones,
Jesus saves all of me
all of me – THE ORCHARDIST // A follower on Instagram recently recommended this artist to me which I was so happy about! They have a very folk-y sound and super interesting and unique lyrics. These lyrics also kind of confused me the first time, but I love the way the song progresses and the passion it conveys to worship God with our whole being.
I go to the hills
When my heart is lonely
I know I will hear
What I’ve heard before
My heart will be blessed
With the sound of music
And I’ll sing once more
the sound of music – FROM “THE SOUND OF MUSIC” // We shall end with a classic. ๐ I used to dislike watching musicals, but I’ve collected several that I enjoy recently, like Hamilton, Fiddler on the Roof, and, of course, The Sound of Music. I love this song, and didn’t really think of looking it up on Spotify until recently.

Fun post! I am always looking for new music to check out because I just do. ๐ I am going to have to look into these! As of lately, I have been listening to a lot of sister/family hymn singing bands. One, they have the cutest music videos! Two, the music is generally catchy! And three, I have just been loving hymns! ๐

Yay! And ha, I know, same. Ooh, that’s sooo neat. I love listening to hymns too! Well honestly, I like singing them, playing them on the piano, or listening to them in church better than on Spotify and such, because hardly anyone just sings them nicely in the usual way. They always add so many flourishes that they don’t sound like the original very much. XD I think the family hymn singing bands would be great for that, though!

I listened to all the songs you have on here! I’m always interested in the music that you recommend. ๐ Two in particular were enjoyable for me. The first was Twinkling Lights by Annalise Emerick. I liked the nostalgic, summer theme, as I can relate to that, and her voice was nice. The only thing I didn’t like so much was the reference to beer… The other was All of Me by The Orchadist. The voice, instrumentation, and music was pretty good! Oh, and of course I like The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music song. After I read your post my sister and I went and listened to a bunch of of the songs from the movie, as they’re all so good! Julie Andrews is a fantastic singer and actress, and The Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies. I, too, didn’t used to care for musicals as a genre, but now I really appreciate them.
Lately I’ve been listening to some different music, and I’m looking forward to sharing some songs in my next email to you about music! I assume you received my email I sent a while back on the topic?
LikeLike
Wow, YAY! I’m so glad you were able to listen to all of them! I liked that one for the same reason, but yeah, the reference to beer sort of broke the innocence childlike-ness and nostalgia of the mood a little. XD Ooh yeah! And heh heh, YES. Same here! And guess what? I just checked my comments on the way to loading some YouTube videos as I’ve been working on that very email tonight. ๐ I will send it soon!

Just now checking out some of these songs and I think I am in love with The Orchardist. I love folksy music like that!
Also Matt and Savanna are super sweet, too. Sometimes he gets this smile on his face like an I’m-so-proud-of-my-daughter look and it melts me heart! โค
