The First Signs of Spring

Hello friends!

I have a lush little photoshoot to share with you today. I know it’s only the beginning of February, but I’m already excited for spring. I’ve spotted a bunch of daffodil spears poking up around my yard as well as lots of weed flowers sprinkling the grass.

At this point in the year, most of the signs of spring are tiny and easily missed, so I decided to capture them with my favorite macro extension tubes (aff. link). Enjoy this macro nature photography!

We’ll start with one of my favorite pictures of one of my favorite things: moss! I regularly bring some inside for centerpieces because it’s so vibrant and full of life. I love how moss is basically a bunch of tiny individual plants.

I just looked this up and apparently it’s hairy bittercress. Such a lovely name, haha. But the white flowers are cute close up.

I always like photographing the texture of leaves with my macro lens. They’re especially pretty covered in frost, but sunshine is nice too.

This weed, which looks like vetch to me, sprang up in my mint flowerpot on the front porch. Tiny green tendrils wrap the old, dead mint stalks.

The dogwood bush is still quite brown, but tiny, soft buds are swelling at the tips of the branches.

Ah, the classic Speedwell. Always one of my favorite weed flowers as a kid. They’re such a bright, cheerful blue.

A tiny ocean cup hidden in my lawn. 🙂

More fuzzy leaves! I like the succulent rosette shape of these.

Henbit is another classic weed flower. They’re prettiest in large, distant swaths of purple or super close up where you can appreciate the pretty tube-shaped blooms.

I spotted this delicate seed parachute while I was photographing henbit. I love how it sparkles in the sun.

You can’t get more well-known than the dandelion. They look like plain yellow disks until you inspect them closely to find dozens of miniature curlicues covering the bloom.

It took me so many shots to get the center of this chickweed flower in focus, phew. I love the macro lens I have, but it doesn’t have autofocus, so it takes a bit of patience to get good photos.

Our rosebush is growing tender red and green leaves. I’m looking forward to rose season coming again!

The forsythia bushes are still wearing winter clothes, but it won’t be long at all until these dry shells are replaced with bright yellow buds.

I also found a ladybug quietly hibernating, soaking up the sun. I think she’s hoping for spring too. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed seeing these pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them! It’s so relaxing to focus on the tiny, beautiful details of nature, opening up a magical world even in your backyard. If you’re interested in macro photography, I definitely recommend the macro extension tubes I use. Find them here (affiliate link).

Which picture was your favorite? What is your favorite kind of weed flower?

Thanks so much for reading, my friends, and have a lovely day!

      1. That’s true, it’s always going to be spring, but sometimes I think spring, as well as summer, autumn and very occasionally winter, are a bit confused 😉

  1. Lovely, Allison!
I’ve never seen a Speedwell plant- so pretty! And blue is one of my favorite colors. 😉
Another favorites is the one right after with the rose shaped fuzzy leaves. I love how detailed God made even the tiniest of forage.
I can’t wait for Spring too- my favorite season! I love when our native Texas plants show up in Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, and Indian Blanket.
Thank you for sharing, friend! God bless you!

I know, right?! Macro photography never fails to amaze me at God’s incredible attention to detail.
I think spring is my favorite season too. Ahhhh those flowers sound gorgeous. Bluebonnets especially!
