Make a Zoo Terrarium

My little sister Carmen, and I had fun making a little zoo terrarium with some of the bajillions of plastic animals we have piled up. We first put a fresh layer of soil down in a glass aquarium and divided the space into six pens of various sizes by scraping a line in the dirt. Then we made fences by gluing three toothpicks evenly spaced onto a pair of small wooden craft sticks, like so. I was too lazy to get up to take another picture, so I just sat at the computer and made a diagram instead. 🙂

I transplanted a few succulents in the pens. Then came the fun part – furnishing the pens!

Rabbit, hamster, and mouse pen: Hutch: sides from cardboard, roof from wooden craft sticks. Food and water bowls: metal bottle caps, water for water bowl, cardboard bits for food bowl. Straw: Uh… something like really thin raffia.

Turtles’ pen: half of a plastic Easter egg for the pond, a rock inside the pond for an island, water in the pond, and a little ‘moss puff” on the side.

Dog pen: Doghouse from cardboard, bowls from plastic bottle caps. Food: tiny squares of cardboard.

Safari pen: Um, pretty much a succulent with a couple of smooth rocks.

Farm pen: Cardboard barn, straw from raffia. (By the way, this is definitely NOT what our farm looks like. :P)

Woodland pen: Moss puffs, quartz rocks, and clay toadstools made by yours truly.

Here are some shots of the whole thing.

Forest Terrarium

I love making terrariums/ fairy houses/ miniature gardens, and I got some cute little forest animals for my birthday from my friends, so I decided to make a forest terrarium with the glass tank we have.  I’ll show you mine so you can get an idea of how to make one, and then you can be creative and make your own!

——- I used ——-

-succulents (which I also got for my birthday)

-a random little bushy plant from the woods

-a stump thingy from a miniatures store

-miniature forest animals (my friends said they were from Target)

-soil

-moss

-quartz crystals (from around our farm)

-rocks

I planted the shrubby things along the back of the terrarium.  Most of the succulents I made into little gardens with crystals in the two front corners of the terrarium.  I always think moss adds a nice touch, especially for a woods.  My favorite animals in their habitat are probably the wolf howling from the rock, or the skunk on a log.  Which are your favorites?

Creatures and Critters

Here are some pictures of a few of the creatures and critters around our farm.

A green frog  (we are actually keeping her in a terrarium in our house)

An orb weaver spider – see the zigzag in her web?

A monarch – Did you know you can tell if it’s a monarch or a viceroy by checking if it has a black band across its bottom wings?  If it doesn’t have the band, it’s a monarch, if it does, it’s a viceroy.  This is a monarch – no black band.

A praying mantis – it is actually eating a bumblebee – see its head in one claw and its body in the other? (Gross!)

And here is Jinx, our cat, with spiderwebs on his whiskers.  He doesn’t look too pleased to have his picture taken.☺

Make A Terrarium

So, we have this salamander named Petunia as a pet,

and she lives in a 10 gallon glass tank.  Since I love to make terrariums and miniature gardens, I decided to make something similar for her to live in.  She now lives in a terrarium.  Why make a terrarium?  Terrariums are fun, inexpensive(or free!), and make lovely decorations.

Now for the do-it-yourself part. Terrariums are very customizable, but you’ll at least need: some sort of soil, a container, and some plants.  Some other nice things to add are:  some sort of water, (refer to the picture of Petunia in her pond)

moss,

and pretty stones.

You could also add a little house or cabin,

and what about a little clay bird to occupy the “trees”?

There are all kinds of possibilities.  A desert terrarium?  A rainforest one? Be creative!

A terrarium is pretty easy to take care of.  You basically just have to water the plants.  Moss can be harder to keep green (at least for me), but it really adds a lush atmosphere to the terrarium if you take care of it.

So there you go!  Now you know how to make your own terrarium, so get out there and have some fun!

Until next time…
