Indoor Photoshoot {Black & White Edition}

Hello, my friends!

When I was taking pictures for the last post, I kept coming across interesting patterns and scenes which would look perfect in black and white. I ended up with too many of those to squeeze into the first post, so I figured I’d collect them all here for you guys. B&W photos are a great way to capture interesting shapes and textures if the colors and lighting aren’t that great (or even if they are). I had to resist making all the photos monochromatic once I saw how nice these ones looked, haha.

Okay, enjoy some low-key photos of random details from around our house!

Chess sets always seem photogenic to me. It helps that this is a nice chess board Dad helped us make years ago. I only realized how wobbly the line of pawns was after I took the picture, but hey, it’s more realistic this way!

I like how this photo lets you peek into five different rooms at once. The chess pieces in the middle remain calm and unfazed in the midst of all those chaotic layers.

We used to have a problem with scissors constantly disappearing, but now we have a bajillion in the house. I have so many extra in the crate beside me right now in my studio, haha. At least these made a nice picture!

I took a bunch of photos of this neat vintage typewriter we have. The ink ribbon thingy needs to be replaced so it doesn’t type all that well, but it technically still works. Regardless, it makes a nice decoration and a fascinating toy for young guests.

I think nature and more organic shapes and colors photograph best in color, while man-made objects and architecture can look striking in black and white. Like these little typewriter “teeth.” 😛

This is such a classic, “boring” photo, but I love it! It’s too bad our modern laptops don’t look as cute as these old typewriters, huh? Still, I’m glad I’m not writing out this blog post on a keyboard like the one in the picture. It’d be awfully loud and slow for me.

Cute little washing-machine valves in the laundry room wall. 😛 Oh! Yikes, that just reminded me – I need to start the laundry! Okay, I’ll be back in a bit…

Okay, all set! I think laundry is one of the pleasantest household chores, but I’m terrible at remembering to switch it over unless I set a timer. :[] Anyway, here’s the result of more chores: pizza sauce we canned from our garden tomatoes! We eat a lot of homemade pizza; this will come in handy.

Another reflection photo, featuring the biggest fern we have looking out onto our new car. We recently traded in our old Yukon for a smaller car with way better gas mileage, but which can’t fit all seven of us. Logan always likes to drive his truck places, and for events like church, we end up having to drive separately because of different responsibilities anyway, so it works. Still, it’s a little sad…

I thought the rolled towels in my parents’ bathroom would look nice in black and white, and whaddya know – they did!

This old bathtub in the downstairs bathroom was already here when we moved. Neat knobs. 🙂

Oof, blurry! Oh well. That big cabinet holds many quilts either given to us by talented relatives or made by Megan and I. The cabinet in the wall holds… a lot of lightbulbs. O.o It was well-stocked when we moved here.

Moving upstairs to the girls’ bedroom again. My parents gave me this aloe vera plant for my birthday this year. I like how the spikes look with the soft lace curtains in this photo.

Heh, very random, but I had fun with this one: a ceiling fan… wait, what are those called? Cord? Pull? My mind just blanked out on the name. Anyway, one of those things and Tom the cat on my bed in the background. 😛

These doors lead to a lovely upstairs balcony we don’t use much because the birds are both fond of it and quite messy. We put a bench there because the doors don’t shut properly otherwise. 😛 The joys of old houses, right?

We’ll end with one of my favorite photos in this post: a ceiling fan. Hehe. Upstairs balconies are helpful for taking pictures of tall ceilings!

  10. I absolutely loved this photoshoot! B&W is probably my favorite filter for a photo, it gives them such a nice touch. Wonderful job, they all look fantastic! You have such a talent.
    I’ve been thinking about getting a camera and was wondering if you use a Nikon D3400 for all of your photos or if you have any good suggestions for a potential camera purchase!

    1. Yayyy, I’m so happy to hear that! I love the B&W filter too. Thanks for the kind words.
      Yes, I would recommend the Nikon D3400! That’s what I’ve used pretty much exclusively for my blog’s photos for the past several years. I just upgraded to a Nikon D7200 but I haven’t used it much so I can’t recommend it one way or another. If you aren’t ready for a DSLR, you can try a camera like the Nikon L840 (or a newer model) which helps get you into the swing of things. 🙂 Hope that helps!

  11. Cool post!! I would love to try something like that (random around the house photos) but unfortunately, my house doesn’t have nearly enough windows so I doubt they’d turn out. 😦
    Also I prefer the black and white version of the stool photo, though both are neat. I think B&W highlights the scraps and scars on the chair. It kinda creates a story.

    1. Thanks so much! Aww, that’s too bad. Well black and white photos are actually great when you don’t have enough lighting for the colors to show up well! So I bet you could still make some pretty neat photos. 🙂
      Ah, I love how you described that, Heidi! I think B&W lends itself very well to telling the story of a photo.
