Hidden Treasures & Airplane Skies {a Golden Hour Walk}

Hello, my friends!

I have more golden hour pictures for you! While on a walk the other evening, I got in that photographing mood where I try and make pretty pictures out of the most random or unphotogenic things. It was great. 😀 So today I present you with a selection of dramatic thorns, color treasure hunts, airplane clouds, and candles in windows.

Want to go on a walk with me? Well yay! Let’s go.

Sometimes the only reason I decide to take a walk is because I glance out my studio window and the light is SO PRETTY. That’s what happened for this photoshoot. The colors outside were just begging to be photographed, and I needed a break from working at my desk anyway. 😉 Ahh, so worth it! I love this.

The one and only collage in this post. *shrugs* I think magnolia leaves look so… I don’t know, luxurious or refined at golden hour. The rich colors remind me of a wedding or something!

I hadn’t been down to the little white shed in this post for a while, so I betook myself there forthwith. (I didn’t have anything else interesting to say about this one. Apologies.)

The light! The shadows!

This shed is overgrown with vines and weeds and thorns, which can make for quite lovely subjects when you have glowy light and a sunflare to beautify them.

Or even if you don’t, you can always go for a moody black and white. This one reminds me so much of the thorn photos I posted here.

Anyway, even though the sun was beautiful, I was having a hard time finding things to photograph that I haven’t already photographed before, you know? So I decided to sit down on the steps by the door to see if I found new subjects from that perspective. And I did!

I was delighted to find a little strip of sunlight that looked like gold paint or gold leaf hiding behind the wood. It was like finding a piece of hidden treasure since you could only notice it from a certain angle. I suppose it makes a rather boring photo, hehe, but it made me happy so I wanted to share it. 🙂

After that I started noticing bits of orange light everywhere, like gold plating over every ordinary thing. Even this rusty doorknob looked enchanting!

Also it doesn’t show up well in pictures, but something about the orange light made the shadows look strikingly blue, like a paintbox cyan. Finding colors like that makes my artist’s heart happy. 😀

Okay, one last boring photo and then I promise we can move on. XD But see?? I had so much fun hunting for bits of orange and blue like the color-puddles in this knothole.

Alright, enough with the strange excitement over random colors. XD Here’s a show of color that’s a little easier to enjoy. Ahh, I love sunsets so much!

I’m not sure what type of pine this is, but its abundance of pinecones make for an interesting silhouette! (And oh dear, I just noticed the chromatic aberration and it’s too late now… Soooorry, Aria. XD )

I managed to catch this plane through the trees before it passed. *applauds* When I shoot photos of a small, moving target like this I feel like I’m a successful hunter. 😛

Can you spot one airplane and… I-don’t-want-to-take-the-time-to-count-how-many birds? (Also fun fact: it takes way too long to hyphenate word combinations like that. I definitely could have counted the birds in that time, especially if you include the time it took to type this explanatory sentence too. Oops.)

Speaking of moving targets… well no, the moon wasn’t moving noticeably, but the clouds were. I quick snapped a picture before it clouded over again. Also wait, guys. IT’S ANOTHER TINY MOON. (Remember, from this post? 😉 )

Now for a black and white break. (Sorry but I’m not hyphenating that too. XD) Ahem. Just another picture of our house because it’s apparently very photographable. (Is that seriously a word?? I don’t see a red squiggly line under it… Wow. You learn something new every day.)

My mom put candles in the windows facing the road and I LOVE THEM. They make the house so much cozier, don’t you think?

It was quite entertaining to play around with negative space for these photos and similar unposted ones. I think composition is especially important in architectural photos. Houses have a lot of details that are often more interesting when separated from the rest of the building and given room to “breathe.”

Another random photo of our kind of unphotogenic side porch which for some reason looked pretty to me that night. I was really in a photographing mood, apparently. :’D And still looking for architectural white space and the complementary way orange and blue go together (more artist color talk yay). Thusly, I stepped back for one last picture before I went inside.

Well. That was an interesting photoshoot. Heh, thanks for sticking with me and my weird captions today. 😀 I hope you enjoyed this color treasure hunt as much as I did! Also stick around because I’m going to introduce you guys to two very fluffy new pets next week! I can’t wait. 😀 Until then…

Does spotting pretty colors make you happy too or is it just me? :’D Are you a fan of candles in windows? Which of these photos was your favorite?

Thanks so much for reading, my friends, and have a lovely day!

  1. Even if you had not asked at the bottom of your post ‘Are you a fan of candles in windows?’ I would have been compelled to comment upon the subject. Yes! I love candles in windows! Unfortunately, our windowsills are not wide enough to hold candles without the danger of them tipping off, so I must console myself with candles on tables.

    1. Hehe, well yay! I’m so glad you like them too! Well, you know what? The candles we got come with suction cups so we can put them even in our big, old windows that don’t have windowsills! It doesn’t look as nice as no suction cups, but it’s actually not too bad and it looks great from outside. 🙂

  2. Hi Allison! I recently found your blog when searching for pen pal ideas, and I loved those posts. Your photography skills are amazing. I also love spotting pretty colors, especially in the fall when the trees change color. My favorite is the rusty doorknob. It makes for a lovely photo. 🙂 I blog about snail mail and pen pals over at https://theforgottenquillpen.blogspot.com if you’re interested. Have a nice day!
