A Few Tidbits

This is a random post of pictures of lots of little things that aren’t hardly big enough for their own post, but are not small enough to be left out.  They are gathered here today for your viewing pleasure.

This is a picture I took awhile ago of the beautifully straight rows of soybeans in one of our fields.  I’m sure it looks quite different now!

Here is a fun little rock that looks like it has a “b” on it.

A cute tiny froggie:

A little village made from rambutan shells – rambutans are a fruit that our friends introduced us too, with soft but spiky-looking shells and a soft sweet fruit in the middle.

The chief’s house:

We picked a bunch of apples today to make applesauce with (YUM!) and they all looked so pretty laid out on the ground.  I like this smaller photo because it shows the interesting texture better.

And here is a flip-flop makeover – I drew a pretty design on the straps with Sharpie.  Simple, effective, but it took a long time!

Have a nice one!  (And by the way, the next post will reveal the mystery, so you better guess quick if you want to guess at all!)

Mystery Pictures Post #3

And I’m back again with a little game.  Remember Mystery Pictures?  If you don’t, here’s the rundown:  I will show you some mysterious, close-up pictures of… something, and you will try to guess what it is.  In a post in the near future, I will tell you the answers, who guessed what right, and links to their blogs.  (Oh, and you can see my two previous Mystery Picture posts here and there.  Got it?  Ok, let’s go!

New Additions

Yep, we already have a lot of pets (5 rabbits, 1 cat, 1 dog, 2 kittens) but we just added more!  We now have 5 crayfish, and um… a LOT of underwater snails!  The crayfish (also called crawdads, crawfish, or mudbugs) are fascinating to watch.  We have the four biggest ones in a large tank, and the smallest one (which is mine by the way!) is in a fishbowl so he/she won’t get eaten.

DSCN9926

I named mine Mudbug, and the other four are Duncan, Mike, Bart, and Jamie.  Sometimes the big ones fight each other, and they make their own little nooks and crannies to hide in in the tank.  But I think the most fun thing to watch is when they eat.  Believe it or not, they love frozen peas!  When we give them to the crayfish, they grab the peas and start tearing off little bites.  I took a video of one of the crayfish eating, and one of a cute little underwater snail trying to lick the glass of the tank – two more videos for my YouTube channel!

And here are some pictures.  (The last crayfish picture shows the swimmerets – the little feathery things under its tail.  The swimmerets help the crayfish swim, they fan water over its gills, and for the females, they hold the eggs!)

And here is a snail.

P.S  We also have 5 black swallowtail caterpillars!  (But no pictures.)

A Bunny Family Meal

Whew, it’s hot here!  It feels kind of like summer – I’m not sure why…. ☺  Anyway, the bunnies get really hot here too, so one day we gave them a cool treat – fresh lettuce on an ice table – yum!  As you can imagine, they kind of really enjoyed it. So now without further ado, I present A Bunny Family Meal (with commentary).

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 049

Here stands the lonely ice table, laden with fresh lettuce, but with no one to eat from it’s iciness.

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 050

Hooray!  The table is gladdened by the arrival of Honeybunny, who grabs a leaf and chomps away.

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 057

The sound of Honeybunny’s enjoyment spreads throughout the cage, and draws not one, not two, but THREE other rabbits to the table to eat of the bounty.

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 056

The innocent Lily is disturbed from her meal by a greedy Mango.  How rude!

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 057

But justice is restored – Miss Lily gets the last piece.

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 054

Ahhhhh!  Cold lettuce – how satisfying!

-Allison(Lily, flubber) 058

Full and furry, my friend, full and furry.  And thus ends A Bunny Family Meal.  Thank you for reading, and come again!

Make the Perfect Buggle House

What is a buggle?  Good question.  It is a very reclusive species of Glass marblus insectus, more commonly known as a buggle.  Never heard of it?  Well, don’t worry, you can make your own!  You just need flat-bottomed glass marbles, paper, and googly-eyes. (I actually made their eyes out of hole punches.  I glued two small black hole punches to two bigger, white ones.  For the baby buggle (which I made out of a smaller glass marble) I made two black dots on two of the smallest hole punches.)  Click here to see the buggle tutorial.

Great, you’ve made the buggles?  Now let us construct the perfect home.

1. Find a small box, like a soap box.

dscn9747

2.  Tape any open ends closed.

dscn9751

3.  Wrap it up nicely in cute wrapping paper.

dscn9754

4.  Use an Exacto knife to cut around three sides of the box to make a flap. (See picture.)

dscn9760

5.  Use pretty tape to cover rough edges.

dscn9764

6.  Draw a charming little entrance on the front of the box.

dscn9781

7.  The really fun part!  Give your buggles some nice furniture, some food and water bowls, and maybe a garland.  You can make stuff out of almost anything, but if you don’t have craft supplies, you can draw furniture too.  Now put your buggles in their new home.

dscn9788

I also made a way to keep the box closed (not shown) by putting a sticky dimensional foam square on the front, and gluing a ribbon to the top.  The ribbon sticks to the foam square and holds it closed.

dscn9798

Now you can play with your buggles!  You can keep them neatly in their box, or take them out.  With their convenient home, you can take them along in the car.

I made these with some kids I babysit, and they loved making the furniture.  They got very creative!  (I prepared the boxes first though, because they are a little tricky for younger kids, and then they filled it with furniture and made the buggles.)

Happy buggle-making!

5 Fun Road Trip Games

Summer is the season for road trips!  Here is a collection of some fun games you can play while driving.

1.  Pink Toads – One person is “it.”  The other players take turns asking the “it” person questions, to which he can only answer “pink toads.”  If he laughs, the person who asked the question that made him laugh gets to be “it.”  Example: Player 1: “What did you have for breakfast?” “It”: “Pink toads!”  (If the “it” person laughs here, it would be Player 1’s turn to be it.)

Variation: Instead of saying “pink toads,” you can make up your own silly phrase, like “fluffy bathtubs,” “rainbow gophers,” or “a hairball.”

2.  Ghost – This one is really fun, but a little hard to explain.  The instructions are kind of long, but it’s worth it!

Player 1 starts the round by saying a letter ( like “b”).  Player 2 adds another letter, but making sure that there is actually a word that starts with those letters. (For example, you wouldn’t want to say “x” here unless you were sure there was a word that started with b-x-…. but I don’t think there is.) So say Player 2 adds the letter “l,” because he is thinking of the word “black.”  Now Player 3 adds “o,” Player 4 adds “c” and Player 5 can’t think of any other word but “block,” that starts with those letters, so he says “k.”  Since Player 5 ended the word, he is now 1/3 of a ghost.  When someone ends a word three times, they are a whole ghost, and they are out.  But they can still sort of play: any player who talks to or answers someone who’s out is an extra 1/3 of a ghost.  So if you only ended the word once, but you talked to an “out” player twice, you are out.

You can only end a word if it’s more than 2 letters long.  Example: If the word was b-i so far, if you said “t,” you would end the word (“bit”) but if the word was “b” so far and you said “y,” it wouldn’t count as ending a word because it’s only two letters.

Proper nouns are not allowed.

If you don’t know what letter to do next, you can just say a random letter.  If the next player doesn’t think you have a word in mind, or thinks you spelled it wrong, they can challenge you.  They just say “I challenge you” on their turn.  Then you have to say the word you were thinking of, or that you didn’t have a word.  If your word was right, the challenger gets 1/3 of a ghost, but if it was wrong, you get 1/3 of a ghost.

The game ends when one player ends by being the last one who’s not a ghost.

3.  Alphabet Game – Most people already know this one, but it’s a goody!  And there are a few variations that you might not have heard of.

Variations:

Sink ’em!: If, while playing the game, you pass a body of water, a junkyard, or a graveyard, shout “Sink ’em!”, “Junk ’em!”, or “Bury ’em!” respectively.  The first person to shout this makes everyone else start back at “A,” while he can continue where he left off.

Single: Every man for himself!  Each player races the others to see who can find the all the letters of the alphabet in order by looking on signs, license plates, anything outside (not behind you and not on your car) with letters on it!  The first person to get to “z” first, wins.

Team: Like single, except everyone works as a team to find letters, instead of competing with one another.

Backwards: Instead of finding the letters in order from a-z, find them from z-a.

4.  Plate-Names: Make each letter of a license plate ahead of you stand for a word.  Example: HWER could stand for “Hairy Warthogs Eat Rocks.”

Variation: Do this with the first letters of each word on a sign.  Example: Greenville City could stand for “Grumpy Crocodiles.”

5.  Category Mania: Choose a category and try to get a certain number of things in that category for each letter of the alphabet.  Example: Category: Animal, Number: 2.  Try to get 2 animals that start with “a,” 2 with “b,” etc.  Try different categories like food, plants, and cars.

What is your favorite road trip game?  Are any of these games new to you?

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

We now have another bunny on the farm!  My brother Jeff bought him just yesterday.  Here is his “profile.”

*************************************

Breed: New Zealand

Color: White

Name: Olaf (!!!!)

Gender: Buck (male) (Update: several weeks later, we found out that Olaf is actually a female! But when I first wrote this post, we didn’t know. XD )

****************************

And look at the last thing on the list – he’s a male!  Since we have two female New Zealands (Lily and Mango) we are going to breed them, which means that you will probably be seeing some pictures of cute little baby bunnies!  Sadly, it will probably be awhile, because we have to wait until the rabbits are older to breed them. 😦  But probably sometime next year.

And now for the pictures!

DSCN9799 DSCN9800 DSCN9802  DSCN9806 DSCN9809 DSCN9811

I love his beautiful, snow-white fur.

One more thing: I have several posts to do, but which do you want me to do first?

Oh – one MORE thing: should I do a profile page for all our bunnies, like with a picture, and information about them and stuff?

The Berlin Wall: Chapter 6, Part 2 – The FINALE!

And here it is – the last part of The Berlin Wall!  (See previous chapters here.)  At the end I will tell you a little about the real Berlin Wall.

****************************************************************

Mama! Papa! Korrie! Joyce!” I shouted. They all looked up with startled faces.

Mama was the first to recognize me. “Oh! Greta, Greta darling!” She flew from the table and hugged me hard. Soon everyone was flocking around me and laughing and crying and asking questions.

Before I answered anyone, I led them to the backyard and to everyone waiting in the balloon basket. Everyone was almost hysterical at a reunion so soon.

We spent the rest of that day in exchanging stories, and catching up. Korrie was engaged, and Joyce was still single. Mama and Papa were both in good health and all the more for seeing me again. Joyce and Maria were ecstatic about seeing each other, and Maria introduced everyone to Kristopher who was still a little dizzy, but happy that he could finally meet all the people that Maria and I talked about so often.

The doctor came later and gave Kristopher some ointment to help his head recover. The doctor said that Kristopher would be fine in a few days, but that until then he must rest. The doctor also diagnosed me with a broken left arm, and Maria’s father with a broken ankle. But these were things that would heal. The main thing was that we were together again!

About 18 years later, the Soviets proclaimed that all East Germans were free to go into West Germany if they so wished. At first people were skeptical, but when they saw that it was no trick, people started pouring through the wall. A few people started chipping off pieces of the wall. Nobody stopped them, and soon everyone was tearing down the wall with wild enthusiasm. My family and Maria’s family came too. (Korrie and I were married by that time, and Maria and Kristopher had two children. Joyce stayed single the rest of her life.) We brought pickaxes, our hands, stones, whatever we could find, and attacked the wall. Soon it was all torn down, the wall that had caused so many people misery and death. All that is left today is cobblestones showing where the wall once was. The Iron Curtain as it was called, is now only a bad memory. But as for me, I will never forget that dreadful day of the sleepover and the horrible Berlin Wall.

The End

I hope you enjoyed reading along!  Now for some facts:

Click here to read an article about the Berlin Wall. There are even a few paragraphs about the dangerous escapes people made – one kind of escape really was in a hot air balloon!

This story definitely used true facts, but the characters are fictional, and the whole part about the Berlin Wall is sort of mixed up time-wise.  There really was a Berlin Wall though, and many, many people actually lived the hardships behind the wall.  As I said above, the hot-air balloon escape was an actual event, but lots of people weren’t so lucky.  Doesn’t that make you glad for our freedom in America?!

Thank you everyone for reading, and have a fine day!
