Draw a Transforming Face

One day recently when I was bored I drew this face on my finger.  If you bend your finger down, the face looks young and happy, but if you straighten it out, it looks wrinkled and, well, strange.

-Allison (bunnies dressed up) 055 -Allison (bunnies dressed up) 056

The key to making the face transform is to draw it in the wrinkly part of your knuckle.  (Wow, that sounds really weird.)  You have to figure out which wrinkles will be the eyebrows, eyes, and mouth.  You pretty much draw slightly curved or straight lines for everything while you bend your finger, and then straighten it out and voila! it transforms.  You can make a little nose too if you want.  For some reason, it is really fun to bend your finger back and forth and watch the face change, which makes it a really fun boredom buster.

Thank you for reading this random and slightly odd post! ☺☺☺☺☺  Have fun transforming faces, and let me know if it worked!

30-Second Sketch: A Game

30-sec

The other day I made up a game called 30-Second Sketch and I thought I’d share it with you.  Here are the rules:

**************************************

For 3 or more players.

1. A player chooses a word to draw. (Example: ice cream)

2. Set a timer for 30 seconds.

3.  On “Go!”, someone starts the timer, and all the players must draw a picture of the chosen word in 30 seconds.  Everyone has to keep drawing until the 30 seconds is up, and stop drawing when the 30 seconds is up.

4.  When the time’s up, everyone compares drawings and votes on which drawing is the best. (It doesn’t have to be the most realistic, it can be the cutest, funniest, or whatever the players like.)  Whoever wins gets one point.  If there is a tie, each winner gets a point.

5. One round is finished.  The player to the left of the player who chose the first word gets to choose a word next.

6.  The first player to get a certain number of points first, wins!

*************************************************

My brothers and sisters and I had lots of fun playing this way, but here are some variations to try:

***********************************************

1. Make this into a board game by writing the words to draw on cards, and making a gameboard.  When someone gets a point, they move one space on the gameboard.

2.  Instead of each player voting on the best picture, everyone takes turns being the judge for one round, like in Apples to Apples or Picwits.

3.  You can take turns choosing words to draw or you can write several words on slips of paper and take turns choosing one each round.

4.  You can play with two people if the players make a decision together on the best picture.

5. You can play 20-Second-Sketch for a more challenging version, or 40-Second Sketch for an easier version.

***********************************

Happy drawing!

Square Doodles

This is really fun to do because you can use a bunch of different kinds of doodles and they all come together to make a really nice piece of wall art.  You could do a color scheme like I did, or make a colorful, rainbow square-doodle paper.  I colored this with purple, blue, and green gel pens. I got some doodle ideas and I think even the whole square-doodle paper idea from this doodling blog: https://doodleaddicted.wordpress.com/

The hardest part about making this is making the squares to put the doodles in.  You might be able to print off a template for this somewhere, but I just did it by hand by measuring it off.

You could also do this in random circles across the page or put the doodles in outlines of hearts or whatever you want.

Doodle Fun: Heartstrings

-Allison(Heart doodle) 016

I like this technique of doodling.  I’m sure other people have already thought of it, but I found it out myself one day and liked it.  I decided to show you how to doodle it so you could have fun with it too.  Here we go!

First, make any shape you like (it doesn’t have to be a heart).

-Allison(Heart doodle) 010

Next, start drawing columns within the borders of your shape.

-Allison(Heart doodle) 011  Don’t draw the columns over top of each other, just let the go under each other.

-Allison(Heart doodle) 012

It looks neat to make the columns different sizes too.

-Allison(Heart doodle) 013

Now for the coloring part! (Yaay!)  I just chose three main colors, but you can choose more if you like – try it with rainbow colors! You can also use different shades of each color, especially if you don’t have very many colors.

-Allison(Heart doodle) 014-Allison(Heart doodle) 015

I left the background behind the columns white so the columns would stand out a little more.

Ta-daa!  Can you tell why I called it “heartstrings”?

-Allison(Heart doodle) 016

There you go! Have fun with it, customize it, change it how you like.  This technique would be good for cards, bookmarks, etc.

Hope you enjoy!

Fun with Dry-Erase Markers

There are lots of fun things to do with dry-erase markers besides draw on a whiteboard.  These things make good boredom-busters, and are good things to do on a rainy day.  Some of these things are good for parties too.

The first two things are “painting” your nails, and drawing your own temporary tattoos.

2014-8-23-Allison (moth) 008 2014-8-23-Allison (moth) 010

Drawing on your fingernails with dry-erase markers is fun for those who love to paint their nails, or those who aren’t ready for “the real thing” yet.  When your ready to “paint” a new design, just wipe off the marker with your finger or the whiteboard eraser.

2014-8-23-Allison (moth) 013

To completely clean off your nails, wash them with soap and water, and, if you need to, a damp washcloth.

********************************************************************

Now for the temporary tattoos: Just draw anything you like onto your skin.  (My nails are “painted” with dry erase marker in this picture, and I have a dry-erase marker “tattoo”)

2014-2 001

Just wash skin like you did for your nails, and voila! a clean slate.

This can be used as a party or group game.  Draw or print out several sets of doodles beforehand.  Give each player a paper with the same doodle on it.  Each player makes it into a drawing, then compares it to the other players’ drawings.  Every drawing will turn out differently.

***************************************************

The last thing to do with dry-erase markers is fun and simple: just draw with the markers on a mirror or window.  It wipes off easily with a damp paper towel.

**************************************************

Note: Test out your markers in a small spot before you try any of these activities, in case the markers don’t erase for some reason.

I hope you try some of these ideas out, and have fun!

Doodle Fun

If you like to draw or doodle, you’ll like this!  These circle doodles are really fun to make, and they turn out really neat.  They’re only made out of circles, so they’re easy too.

To start with, draw a circle.

2014-8-9-Allison 008

Next, draw a few more circles inside the big one.

2014-8-9-Allison 010

All you have to do now is fill in the leftover space with circles, circles and more circles.

2014-8-9-Allison 013

(Sorry for the blurry pictures here)

2014-8-9-Allison 015

You can stop here, or keep going.  You could make a stepping stone,

2014-8-9-Allison 016

Or go color crazy!

2014-8-9-Allison 017

Experiment with drawing the outline of the circles in different colors…

2014-8-9-Allison 004

Then make a bunch of bubbles!

2014-8-9-Allison 018

There are so many things to do with this.  What did you draw?

******************************************************************************************************************************

I learned how to draw this from this video.  (It’s called “Infinity Elephants”) There are lots of other great doodling videos here.

Have fun!

Game Time!

We were having fun the other day with a little game I made up.  You basically try to get the other person to draw exactly the picture you drew, but by only describing it in words.  There’s an example of the game below.  You can try playing it too, and compare your finished drawing to the picture farther down the page.

*************************************************************************************************

I drew a simple picture for Megan, then I described it in steps for her.

“Draw a small circle in the middle of the paper.

Then draw a half-circle below that circle.  Make sure that it’s touching the circle and the bottom of the page.

Inside the half-circle, draw 8 small circles.

In the middle of the circle that you drew at the beginning, draw a small triangle with the point facing down.

Above the triangle, draw two dots, spaced apart.

Coming out from the top of the circle, make three squiggly lines.

On top of each line, draw a small circle.

*****************************************************************************************

Now compare mine and Megan’s:

Mine:

Megan’s:

2014-6-26 010

I guess I should have told her to draw an arch instead of a half-circle, huh?  Anyway it’s fun to see how they turn out.  Sometimes they’re practically the same, and sometimes they’re totally different.  Oh, and there are a couple of rules for this game.  Of course, you can make up your own version, but I think it works best if you use these rules:

1. No questions- if somebody says,”Draw a triangle,” you can’t ask the size, its position, etc.  It’s up to the person telling you how to draw it to give you the details.

2. You’re not allowed to look at anybody else’s paper until the end of the game.

3. You can’t erase anything-make sure the person who’s giving you instructions is finished before you draw!

4.  If you’re going to draw, say, a window, you can’t just say, “Draw a window,” you have to say something like,  “Draw a square with a plus sign inside it.”

So there you have it! I hope you enjoy playing this game.  We’ve also found a website that has lots of fun printable games like Sudoku, word searches, crossword puzzles, and mazes.  You can customize most if not all of them.  For instance, in the word search, you can type your own words to use in the wordsearch, change the fonts, and other good stuff.  If you’re interested, here’s the link:  theteacherscorner.net

Have fun!
